Please Help - Hub Replacement

I hope someone can help me.
I have a 95 F250HD and am replacing the auto hubs with Warn manuals. In the tear out phase of the old hubs I am stuck at the last part to be removed before I can install the spindle nut kit.
In the Warn instructions the last part to be removed is called a 'wheel retainer'. It looks somewhat like a spindle nut but only has one notch in it instead of four. I have a spanner locknut wrench for the spindle nuts but it has four lugs on it and I am not sure if I should use it to remove the wheel retainer.
Can you tell me how to remove this part?
Thank and regards.

The original style nut uses a wire retainer that has a 90 bend in it that goes into the hole you mentioned. You must remove the wire nut retainer first. It has been a few years since I did one on a half ton,but if I'm not mistaken a regular 6pt.socket may work.
Your best bet is to wipe as much grease out of the area and take a look with a flashlight and see what style nut it uses.

The double nut style that you are going to use will eliminate the wire retainer setup that you currently have.

Thanks 4X4X4X4
I did remove the wire retainer during the tear out - in the instructions Warn refers to it as a 'lockring key'.
Therfore all that is left on the hub is the wheel retainer.
I will have a closer look at it in the morning to see if I can get a socket on something but based on the internal hub it will need to be something similar to the spanner locknut sockets that I have rented. If you think of anything else please let me know.
Thanks.

I put the image from the Warn instructions under the Album in my gallery. Best viewed largest size, the 'wheel retainer' that I am trying to remove is shown on the far left just before the 'wheel hub'.
Access to this part is a challenge as it is about 2" deep inside the housing.

Thanks.

I thought the retainer just kind of pulled or wiggled of.
Once you remove the retainer clip, it would pull straight off.

I'm not at home right now,but later this evening I'll look at my factory shop manual and or look for the old parts to see what's what.I did the hub conversion a few years ago and I can't remember exactly how it was set up.Getting old I guess.

YETI,
That's what I thought as well, especialy when the instructions don't mentioned anything about how to remove this part.

4X4X4X4
Thanks for your help on this. I look forward to hearing from you as to what the shop manual has to say.

It is a locknut. There is one nut and the necessary socket looks something like an electric water heater element socket. The number listed in the Ford service manual is T95T-1197-B.This information is from a 96 model year factory service manual.A good auto parts store should be able to get you one.It fits the 250 and 350 auto hubs. The one for a F-150 is a different part number so it won't work.

You may be able to use a long punch and tap it counter clockwise or long needle nose pliers to get it loose if it isn't too tight, since you only need the special socket one time to take them off.

I hope this helps.

Thanks again 4x4x4x4.
The auto parts store where I purchased the new hubs and nut kit did not tell me about this.
I keyed the part number you mentioned into a search on the net and found this.[URL=http://]http://www.ntxtools.com/undercar/otcldln.htm

I will be asking for this tool when the stores open tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help and I'll write when the job is complete.

I checked out the site...It looks like you're on your way.

If you have any more problems post them.I've got torque specs. and such.I have to refer to the book because I don't remember many of the details from my previous install.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
The right side wheel bearing nut was stubborn so I had to use the 2-3/4" socket to get it off. The left side screwed off by hand!
After I got past that everything went together in just a few minutes and I was out plowing through the snowdrifts last night.
All the best.
