I have a question for the X owners, currently I have a F350 6.0 and have the dreaded leak problem. This is the 3rd time that it will probably need major work to fix it, first time it was just dropping the pans, 2nd time they had to pull the engine to fix it and I think that they will need to pull it again, all under warranty but a hassel. the truck goes out of warranty in May 2011 and I really don't want to be messing with this out of my pocket. I have found a 2005 X that has 100K on it, V10. I have driven the vechile for a couple of days and it seems fine, really clean body, engine looks really clean( of course it has been detailed ) trans fluid clean no smell, shifts as it should. Question to all, what do you think of the V10 as far as reliabilty. I take excellent care of my vechiles and was wondering what I can expect for this X as far as longivity, the report is clean on the X and seems as if it was cared for properly Thanks
I figured the milage wouldn't be great, but it's hard as hell crawling in and out of a Toyota camry, even my son Fusion. Sure they get great milage just don't feel safe in them. Have had trucks since the late 70's and find it hard to own anything else. Just trying to figure out if the V10 is what I want. I have always liked the X's from afar, the 6.0 has left a bad taste in my mouth and I can not see a gasser V8 in the X, seems you would be straining it. I don't tow all the time but we have a pontoon boat we take to the lake(SML) and those tow like anchors, major wind blocks
The V10 is a proven engine. In the '05, you should be ok with the plug spitting issue. Watch those exhaust manifold bolts. Watch the high RPMs when you have E10 fuel. Read the thread in the V10 section sad V10 owner about the E10 gas.
Plug hole damage was a problem in what years? See after I found the 05 I found a 01 for 9K(he wants to sell as he just got a new truck)the reason he is dropping price so much is that he doesn't need it, and no one is interested because the media keeps saying that gas is going to cost a left nut. It has 121K and according to him, new ball joints, brakes, tires, tie rods, shocks 2001 Limited Excursion 6.8 V10, I am tempted just because of the price and leaves money to bank for something that may go wrong
The V10 is great - thirsty but quiet and basically troublefree. The sparkplug thread issue was in 2000-01 models and seems to have been resolved during 02 forward with additional threads in the plug holes. Even the older engines are fine as long as the plugs are installed correctly. Few steps involved but I wouldn't shy away from one. The only thing all of the modulars have an issue with is the rusty exhaust manifold studs. Check for missing studs on top and bottom of each manifold - it can be painful to get them out and a good set of bolts installed. It took me about 10 hours to do mine over 3 nights.
I think in late 02 is when they fixed the plug holes with more threads.
My 02 is fine, even after I replaced the plugs nearly 2 yrs ago.
Is the 05 really going for a premium price? It is hard to justify tho, if you can have extra to get some of the upgrades for it right away. The millage and the upkeep would also have a bearing in the overall picture.
The 2001 Excursion Limited 120K miles price is 9K, the 2005 Excursion Eddie Bower 110K price is 17K both are in very good condition and seem to be well taken care of. The only reason I was thinking of the 01 was that it is coming from the owner as the 05 is at adealer that I have bought from before so you figure that the dealer is making least 3K on the X. I really like the info that you all are giving
I would feel out both of them and see how hungry they are to get rid of em. Maybe private no and maybe dealer yes so it would lessen the gap, but $8000 for upgrades is hard to argue with.
Just for a reference point, I just bought an '04 Excursion, 4x4, 6.8L V-10, with 74,000 miles on it for 11,900 a few months back. I happen to love the combination of options on this one...it's only an XL, but it's got power everything, front and rear air. About the only thing that tells you what it is is the vinyl floor which I love. The guy I bought it from had a 20' boat he pulled back and forth to Elephant Butte occaisionally. (Fresh water Lake in central New Mexico...well away from salt) Good luck in your decision. I have only put 9k miles or so on mine, but I can tell you it's one impressive machine. The ONLY negative is the gas mileage, but most of us who own them have an alternative vehicle to help soak up the miles.
Well doesn't look good for the 05 X Bower, the dealer offer me good money for my truck but I went to check out the X a bit more and I think the front hubs are frozen, they will not rotate at all on either side.
That could be a negotiating item. OEM are in the $230 plus per each side. lots have been replacing with either mile marker or warn hubs. They start in the $100 per set range. The only thing with that route is you loose the auto 4x4 feature and only have manual.
Sometimes with a little maint and work tho you can get the originals going, as long as they are not cracked or corroded.
Well tomorrow morning it's off to see another X (only 110 miles away) It's a 2003 Limited with everything and only 75k miles on it. Carfax is clear and has only had 1 owner. They say everything is as it should be but will wait and see. Dealer said that someone else may be interested in the X Bower also, gotta love dealer tatics
