Ford 460 carb choice

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a new carb for my 84 Ford 460. Presently its all stock, with a 4spd trans. Its 4x4 and in the next year or so, I plan to lift it 4 inches, get a 5spd trans, 35 inch tires, and perhaps get a new cam, heads, and intake. I'm not gonna be doing anything crazy with it occasional towing, hauling, mainly daily driving. I do want some get up and go and be able to have some speed so I am not getting run down on the free way, and break loose tires on occasion.
My 4180 Holley carb is stock and its shot, power valve blown I'm sure gaskets worn etc.

I've narrowed the choices down to one with a cfm of 600-750, vac secondaries, elec choke, and it needs to fit the pattern of the 4180.

I've figured either a Street Avenger, or 4160 Holley would be the best.

What do you think I should get?

I also want to get 10 or more mpgs empty as it will be a daily driver.

I would go with a 750 Edelbrock myself. It worked great on my 77 I had with a mild 460 in it. I used it with both all stock engine and after I installed a Performer intake, headers, a CompCams 268H cam, lifters and valve springs as well as an Edelbrock double roller timing chain.
The 670cfm Truck Avenger would be a good choice as well.

Hey I bought the 600 4160 with elec choke and vac secondaires. it will be quite some time before I hop it up. I mainly just wanted to get it running. For $318 out the door with the gaskets, shipped 2 day it was a damn good price.

Good choice. I just put one of these on my '77 F250 to replace a worn out Motorcraft spread bore (4350). I used a manifold off a '94 F250 to get the square bore Holley mounted without an adapter, then sailed through the California smog inspection (Chassis dyno test). I also snagged the cast iron square bore EGR adapter off the '94 to replace the aluminum spread bore original. With out-of-the-box tuning, I'm getting about 9-10 mpg, a tad less than the Motorcraft was at its best. That Motorcraft was well past its best, though!

Make sure you get a full 12 volts to the choke, don't use the original alternator STA terminal that Ford used (Ford had a lower voltage choke cap at 6-7 volts).

Yeah I installed it today and it was light years different. Starter is now toast but id rather have it blow up in my drive way then at some place. That 460 was so damn loud I was stunned!

I think i'm going to replace my 4180 for a 4160 too.. I simply cannot get it right. The only time it was right.. was when it was wrong. (To put it simply..)

Which one did you order specifically?

For my '77 F-250 / 460 / C6, I ordered a 0-80452:
Holley 0-80452 - Holley Model 4160 Adjustable Float Carburetors - Overview - SummitRacing.com
<http: www.summitracing.com="" parts="" hly-0-80452="">
California smog legal was a big deal in my case. Looks like the price has gone up, big surprise . . .

But, that one isn't listed as fitting your truck ('82 F100). Was it a factory 4 bbl?

Thanks!

Any advantage to the adjustable floats over the non? It says the non shouldn't ever need adjustment.. which is fine with me.

Well the engine isn't stock, it has has a performer rpm intake to fit 4bbls. The 4180 was just thrown on it to get it running and sold by the previous owner. They were running a custom built racing carb; but they got 6-8mpg. I'm guessing 750cfm, but theres no way i'm going that big.
