Hey guys I got the truck cleaned up an tried to start it an on the positive somebody had put a electric fan in front of the radiator an put a switch on the floorboard next to the clutch. Well the wire from the fan is run directly into the positive battery cable. An on the Negative they have the cable an then they have a green cab like on top of it. An when I went to start it I just turned the key just two clicks to get power an I heard a crackling sound from the Negative an saw a puff of white smoke. So I got some new Battery cables for it from NAPA but have not installed then yet. An I bought a new battery from Walmart a Everstart with like 870 cranking amps. I was just wanting to know if there is something I might need to check besides just replace the cables an hit the key an put gas in it?
where is the fan off the engine? check to see if the PO put a fuse inline for the fan, if not you may want to. did the smoke come from the battery or from the selenoid on the fender? you may want to check the switch in the floor to make sure it isn't arcing to the floor making a dead short.
the fan is stuck in front of the radiator & the front grill. an the smoke came from the negative battery cable its self. It made a crackling sound an then saw a puff of white smoke come off the negative battery cable. An to power for the fan somebody got a wire from the fan running straight into the positive battery cable.
It was at the tip of it were the wire an the metal meet. An it was a pretty big puff of smoke not just a little I moved to the other side of the truck an could still see the smoke for bout 20 sec or more after it happened.
