93 Bronco speedometer question

My 93 Bronco's speedometer went out but the tach and all other guages were fine. I replaced the entire instrument cluster with one from an F150 and it all seemed to work fine except my battery kept dying. I had the vehicle checked and found the alternator was not charging so I had it rebuilt. The problem continued so we narrowed it down to one wire on the wire harness which had no contact to match up to on the new instrument cluster that was causing the alternator to malfunction. I put the old cluster back and the alternator is working fine but no speedometer. I have tried 4 different speedomers since then and not one has worked. I don't believe all 4 could have bad speedometers so I believe the problem may be in the wiring. Does anyone know which pins on the wire harness should be hot when the ignition is on? Thanks to any suggestions.

The Bronco has a light in the cluster indicating engagement of 4WD. How are the transmission shift points? Could the issue be the VSS in the rear end?

I'm not sure if it would be the speed sensor. The speedometer/odometer were both working before. Now neither work. The odometer is a blank grey screen.

yea start with the sensor on the rear diff. its known as a rear abs sensor when you go to the parts store. if you say VSS they may give you the wrong part.

this also makes me think your PSOM is perhaps bad. you dont need to replace the entire cluster to replace this part. and you must use one from the same year bronco. Dont try using one from an F150 or a later year bronco mainly because things changed.

just curious is your ABS light on by chance? If so you may have a bad 4WABS control module.

Would the speed sensor cause the odometer to go blank? As for the cluster, I had used one initially from aan f150 and the speedometer/odometer were fine. I have since figured how to disassemble the cluster and remove the speedometer/odometer portion separately.

again you must use a PSOM from a bronco not an F150.

if the Odom is blank then the PSOM is bad. You never said if your ABS light was also on or not.

No the abs light is not on, sorry for leaving that out. I'm not sure what the PSOM is. Where is it located and how can I test it? Thanks.

PSOM = Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module. they are vehicle specific and can only be RE-programmed six (6) times before they "lock" for good. It prevents odometer tampering. The module is the entire section of the instrument cluster containing the speedometer and odometer.
