From a post I made in another section of FTE I have been told the rim width of my factory steel wheels on my 85 4WD F250 is 6", in calling around I have been told 7". Can someone let me know for sure the rim width. Thanks guys.
My '85 E150 had the size stamped right into the wheel rim on the outside, possibly near the valve stem hole. Get a rag and some 409 and start looking....
My stamping was "15x6JJ" iirc, but if that's all you found, well, that's all there is. You can do an outside measurement, if you find about 7-7.5 inches, that's a 6" rim. Hard to do, but you might be able to put the tape through the wheel.
That is what I did and found a width of 7.5" so I guess I have 16x6 8 lug steel wheels. What I want to mount on them is a set of 285/75r16 tires. Is this possible and safe, or do I need to look at other tires, possibly at other wheels?
Mounting them on a skinnier wheel then is recommended will cause the centers to ride higher and can result in wearing out the middle of the tires faster and not allow them to wear even. Just an fyi.
Thanks gents. I will go ahead and order the tires and have them mounted. It's a project truck that I will use for a spare vehicle, for fun, and a general hunting rig once or three times a year. These tires will come first to get it on the road, then a few cosmetic issues, then a 2.5" lift with new shocks. I don't imagine it will see 1,500 hundred miles a year. I will keep my eyes on Craigs list and some salvage yards for a slightly wider steel factory set of wheels, and when I find them I'll have the tires remounted. No hurry. The 460 does eat the gas don't it but it will sure go wherever you point it whether it has a load or not.
