I have a 1993 F-250 with a 7.3 Banks sidewinder and E40d. There is a Banks Transcommand TCE4 TCM installed. Ever since I bought it about 8 months ago, it has shifted rough. When driven slowly it shifts O.K. but with any throttle it seems to rev too high and drops heavy into gear. I knew the tach sensor was bad so I replaced it, but the problem persisted. I know there are about a thousand things tha can affect this trans. The tail lights work fine the TPS/FIPL tests O.K. any sugestions on where to go next. Is there a way to test the Banks TCM?
the banks tcm raises the line pressure of the trans and changes the shift pattern my advice is take it off and drive with out it the trans command and see from there also is the od light flashing
Thanks for the reply rodneywar, The od light was flashing before I replaced the tach sensor but no longer does. To disconnect the tcm do I just unplug it or is there more to it than that?
ok one more question how long has it been flashing cause since it was flashing it goes into limp mode so you can limp back to the shop or home if you keep driving around with it flashing serious transmission damage occurs
According to their explanation, the module doesn't change much at light throttle but firms up shifting significantly at higher throttle. This would work in your favor if you are running a turbocharger (according to Banks that is, I don't like the idea of line pressure risers). Does your truck still have a turbo? You could try removing the transcommand to see how it works.
You could also try checking your throttle position sensor to see if its set too high: Ford diesel 6.9 7.3 IDI

O.K. I'll try to get to all the questions. First of all, even though the tach sensor was bad, it only failed at idle it did read correctly at anything over 1k rpm. and although the od off light would flash at idle intermittantly since I bought the truck, it stopped flashing with any acceleration. I am absolutely certain that the trans never started in 2nd gear, and always shifted to overdrive so I dont think it was ever in limp mode. The turbo is still on the truck. I have tested the TPS and all readings were where they should be. Not sure what you mean by the condition of the tranny fluid. It seems to be normal in color on the dipstick and has always been in normal range when level was checked. I was told by the PO that the trans was rebuilt 10k miles ago (now probably 15k) I read the troubleshooting guide from banks for the TCM and they say 90% of all hard shift problems are from incorrect wiring, so I will check that tomorrow. Thanks again for all the help.
