Quick question About OBD1 Scanner

I've been looking around for and OBD1 scanner for my 89 E250 with fuel injection. It looks like the OBD1's only cover carb engines. Any one have any info to the contrary?

I'm actually looking for a good deal on one if someone wants to move it. Would be great if it was an OBD 1 and 2 so I can use it on the Pontiac we have for a family car.

I'll probably post over in the wanted section too.

Edit: I meant the 5.8l 351W with EFI. Seems they only cover the carbed 351s.

OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics. These scanners access EFI computer (FORD calls it Electronic Engine Control Module) & its sensors, perform tests & shows fault codes stored in the computer. They don't apply to "carb engines".

Have a decent digital OBD1 scanner I used one time on my retired '92 that I'd probably sell if I can remember where I put it.

Of course. But I looked at 2-3 dif sites, and I would see things like "covers 5.8l carbureted version only", which didn't make sense to me either. I must really be mis-reading these things. Anyway, I just want to keep one around, since one vehicle is elderly and the other is middle-aged.

And how in the hell do you spell carbereted? Tried about ten different ways and the spell check keeps going off.

This is the best one to get for the OBD 1 for engines.
Amazon.com: Equus 3145 Ford Digital Code Reader: Automotive

Also sold at most auto part stores for about $30.00.

CARBURETED

Whatever "2-3 dif sites" you looked at, saying "carbureted version only" are obviously not what you want for a 351 EFI.

Found my OBD1 Scanner, it's an Innova Equuus 3145 & certainly doesn't say "covers 5.8l carbureted version only". However it does read codes from earlier engine management systems back to '81, including "feedback carburetors".

We were both "misreading these things". You were stuck on "carbureted version only" & I was on fuel injection only. Equus 3145 reads fault codes on FORD systems '81-'95. Just keep in mind an early Check Engine light on a "carbureted version" is a very simple system compared to early 90's fuel injection computers.

Never thought of Equus 3145 as "the best one" but it is the common, popular & cheap digital scanner. There are expensive professional FORD Fault Code Readers. Took a quick look on Ebay & there's a used 3145 BuyNow for only $15 plus $10 s/h. Think I'll just keep this one around.

Not around here. I just got back from Advance and Pep Boys, and the only one was a 1-2 model at PB for $200. No OBD 1 readers at either, and apparently you can't even order them anymore.

Yeah, I kinds garbled the original question. Sorry about that. But I was on Amazon, Ebay, and I think two other sites, and the first two were only selling units at 5-700+. The other two both listed something like "All Ford 82-95 except 5.8l FI, which of course is precisely the package I have. Probably Chinese sites that got the English messed up or something.

I'll just sit on it and maybe something will pop up on the Bay. I'm in no hurry, its just something to add to the tool collection.

I'm going into town this afternoon, so it gives me good reason to stop by the O'Reillys anyway. I'll probably order from Amazon if I can't find it in the store.

Innova 3145 Truck & Van application chart says it's for '85-'94 with 4.9, 5.0 & 5.8 "E & F Series - 8500 lb GVW or less only".

The Innova 3145 will work on all Ford trucks and vans with OBD 1 system through 1997 F53 MH.
The 1996 on trucks & MH that it works on are over 8500 lb GVW.
If the system is OBD 1 it will work on it.

I know I have two Innova 3145 scanners.

Hey thanks firepop. I talked to O'Reillys and they said they have another at a store across town and they would send for it. I need to call them again tomorrow. If however they are FOS, then I will get in touch post haste.
