I sure am hoping that what I have in mind will work. I just found out that my van has the 3.08 rear end, not the best for towing. However, my son's truck has the 3.5 9" rear end. Will the axle from his truck fit the van? We are thinking of swapping the leaf springs, axle and all. He's in the market for a different truck and wants to take the engine, tranny, and back axle off this truck anyway. I don't know the first thing about the compatibiliy between truck and van axles. I am hoping y'all do. So, would it work?
I believe that the frame width is different between the E and F series. That makes me think its not as straight forward as it might seem. Some things to consider:
Brakes: Size and type.
Axle width/track, capacity.
Wheel Bolt Pattern.
Suspension mounts, capacity.
U Joint size. Are the yokes the same?
Get the tapemeausure out and start making notes. You may find that an axle out if a van will be a whole lot easier to switch.
measure to be sure but the truck axles are typically narrower, as well are their frames meaning shock, spring perches, will need to be removed and welded back on and the track width may be less. I already looked into it for my 98 and was disappointed with my results.
Thanks. It was worth looking into, but you guys are probly right--there's enough of a difference between the trucks and vans that doing a swap like that won't work.
