I'm putting a 302 together for my 79 F150 4x4 shortbed. It currently got 33's and 3.50 gears but 37's and 4.11's or 4.56's are in the near future. I won't be doing any towing but maybe occasionally haul something in the bed. Mostly gonna drive the truck and maybe a little mud. Its got a C6 with a stock converter.
The motor is a 86 302 block from a Lincoln car. Had 50,000 miles and car got wrapped around a tree. I bought the engine for $150, tore it apart and everything is clean as a new penny. I already bought a re-ring kit, rods, mains and cam bearings, oil pump and timing set, and gaskets. Gonna reuse the stock crank, rods, and pistons (flat tops). Here is where I need help. I'm going to use the E6SE heads that we're on the motor, I'm going to get a valve job done on them. I was looking at a E303 cam but I'm not sure yet. The motor has roller lifters. What would be a good cam and intake (carbureted) to go with what I've got already?
Those heads are better for low to mid rpm torque, so the intake and cam should be chosen to suit them.
Probably the stock Mustang HO pieces would be fine.
With only 50,000 miles on it, it's unlikely to need a valve grind. And if it received regular oil changes, the wear will be so low that it probably is better to use the long block as is.
Noooooo... ditch the E6 heads they're corks. I have a set that are fully ported and guess what.. they don't even work as well as untouched E7s!! Everything is an improvement over these boat anchors, do yourself a favor and go find some E7s or Gt40, then when you throw a cam at it the motor will be able to breath well enough to make some power with it.
