This may be a very basic questions
I am looking to purchase a 2004 MY Ranger in a few months, and I have one question. I've read some of the posts regarding diesel engine swaps, but I was wondering if I could get some concrete info. In a very basic sense... what is entailed in swapping out one engine for another? What engines are swappable? What do I have to watch out for? How do I know if an engine is compatible? Any recommendations for mechanics in Los Angeles that could do the swap? Does it make a difference whether it's a 4X2 or 4X4? Basically... I want the modern Ranger... but I want it to be a diesel... for various reasons. Like I said... these may be very basic questions and not worth your time... but any help you can send my way would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Trip Gould
Other than that, swapping a diesel is probably easier, at least older diesels, as the emissions controls were lots simpler. The newer diesels, however, have similar emissions controls to the gasoline engines. In the '80s you could get a factory diesel in a Ranger. May have some info on that elsewhere on this web site, but there are also diesel sites on the web.
Details on a swap depend on the engine... will it bolt up to the bellhousing, fit the mounts, clutch linkage or hydraulic, throttle link, fuel connections, lift pump in the tank, and pressure pump for the injectors .. somewhere. Same stuff as a gas engine swap, but more difficult in some respects because they are not available and no one else does them. Would be great for other areas of the world, or if you lived on a farm and drove only on your own property to avoid the motor vehicle fuel tax (totally legal). Lots of torque if you got the right engine...
