I have located a truck, but just not sure if I should JUMP or keep waiting. Here is the situation, bear with me as I want to be specific and ask people with these OBS Diesels.
1997 Super Cab, 8 foot bed, Automatic, 4x4 power windows, locks, Alloy wheels. The truck has 3 previous owners, and a total of 137,000 miles on it. Drove up to look at it last weekend, the seller is very attached and is hesistant to sell but is banking on it. We could not hear it run as the STARTER, and Batteries were shot. Seller is asking 7000.00 the way it sits.
I know i need to drive it, he offered me to install the starter and batteries as he cant, currently unable to.
Whats wrong List:
Starter
Batteries
Block Heater Cord (SHOT) Possibly Heater
Not sure if the Glow Plugs are out of it, or Relay
One rust bubble over the Wheel Well
PLUS:
CLEAN FRAME
Minimal rust
The owner had 4 BRAND NEW TIRES
New Ball Joints
Fuel Lines were replaced
Differential Fluids Replaced
Is the 7K too much? I mean granted I need to drive it, check the turbo, Check for CC Pressure etc, and Make sure the Trans is in check.
Tell him to hire someone to install the starter and batteries...I wouldnt pay 7k without hearing it run....Kinda weird he'd list it forsale with it not running..
Sounds like you have reservations about it. I refuse to deal on anything or with anyone that I have hesitations about because there's always that good deal somewhere that will show up as soon as you compromise. Just my .02
Yeah it's not a smoking deal I was hoping for, but dont know if I should walk away and let it get away or not.
If the mechanical stuff checks out it would make a nice truck for you so long as you plan on keeping it for a while. If you think you'll be selling in a few years you might have a hard time recouping some of your costs. Its got fairly low miles and sounds like it has been mostly well taken care of. If he wants you to install the starter and batteries, see if he'll knock a few hundred off the price for you or fill the fuel tanks up if you decide to buy it.
He was at 7500, and came down to the 7000. He was driving it and the starter went bad when he went into the Hospital for a surgury. I am attracted to the lower miles and the OBS, But I have the reservation in my mind, Mostly because I couldnt hear it run. I want a truck i can have and use for 5 6 7 plus years.
Ya gotta find another OBS owner/friend to ride along and it's gotta start and drive it a while...Especially with the auto...Any History of pulling anything?
7k is a good deal for a low mileage truck. I might be concerned about the rust. I don't like rust. haha You need to drive it before you even start thinking this is the truck for you. I would install a starter and batteries at his cost. Its a 30 minute job.
Well I did have a friend go with me, we tried to get it to run. The guy told me that if I brought up the batteries, and Starter, swapped them out, and didnt buy the truck he would pay me for them, no questions there.
At one time or another it had a hitch on it, BUT not since the first owner I am told. I am not sure why it was removed, but it was definetly unbolted from the truck.
I checked the back exhaust manifold bolt, and it was in tact.
NO MODS what so ever, OTHER THAN A K&N Air filter, which is why i want to check the intake side of turbo.
Only other concern was some oil residue on the PASS side, intake boot area.
Well the owner called me today, He stated he would come and meet in the middle of our 2 prices. He stated he wants to see me with the truck as he knows i will take care of it.
