and also when using the pyro guage what should the temp not exceed while towing?
International says the 7.3 can handle 1250 degrees all day long. I've seen 1350 for a short while while towing and haven't had any issues. These are pre-turbo temps.
ok thanks. sorry im new to this gauge heat what is the trans temp supposed to be around?
We generally like them as cool as possible. 60-80 degrees above ambient seems about average for a well cooling system. The factory trans cooler is pretty poor so I always recommend a supplemental cooler. Some have installed the 6.0 cooler with satisfactory results. I have a TrueCool that works well. There also is the TrueCool Max out now that looks good as well. Towing really heavy loads will increase your temps, especially in stop and go driving. If you can stay at or below 190 then you should have a long lasting transmission. Try and avoid 220 degree temps if possible and pull over if you see anything near 250-ish. If you do have to pull over, put the trans in park and increase the idle speed slightly until the trans temps cool down.
