429 bell housing

Hi I thought I would ask you 385 guys a few questions. I am rebuilding a 69 Galaxie 500 XL GT 429 convertable 4-spd car. I have found a used 429 and a large input/output toploader and a fork, disc and pres plate, however I am wondering if I have the correct bellhousing. I pulled the 429 out of a truck but it was a car engine, but the bell housing was the same as the one that was in the car but I know for a fact that the one in the car was not from the car. Are they all the same or should I be looking for a car bellhousing? Thanks

If you found it as a unit, then I would venture to say it will bolt up and work just fine. The thing to do is this.....without the clutch and pressure plate installed...bolt the bell housing and tranny to the motor and see how far the input shaft goes into the pilot bearing. As long as it goes in 3/4 or more and doesn't bottom out, then you shouldn't have a problem.

BTW, just because a part comes from a car, doesn't mean it won't work with a truck and vice versa. One division of Ford may have been costed for the part and that divisions letter is on the part, doesn't mean another division didn't use the part.

Example....D0OE-R CJ heads were costed to the Fairlane (O) line of cars (third position of the first 4 of the part number) , but the CJ engines were used in Mustangs too. The Mustang letter for in the third position would be "Z" where as the truck division would be a "T" in the third position.

I am trying to restore this to originall and I am just wondering if this is the correct style for restoration or if the car one is so different that I should try and find a car bellhousing. Thanks

The car bellhousings have support ribs up the back side and a threaded hole near the hole were the clutch fork goes through. I can't remember all of the part number but it started with a C9. The number is on the inside just above the hole were the tranny goes through. These bellhousings are deeper than the ones for a 400-351, they were made to take a long style pressure plate and 11-1/2" clutch disk.
