I hope I don't sound like and old fogey but, what is the deal with these huge 20, 21, 22 inch wheels coming out? Some of them look positively ugly and tacky. My pickup has sixteen inch wheels and the biggest I would consider is maybe a seventeen. With so much metal and little rubber the ride with these monstrosities is surely rough.
I ain't into those hubs either..I like all rubber and my truck stays in mud so you never see my hubcaps at all they so muddy...Those things are ugly and look like crap to me....
I believe that the original concept was to put a larger diameter wheel, 16 or 17 inch, with a lower profile tire on sports cars, to increase the handling. The less sidewall you have, the less flexing. Increases cornering ability, but with a loss of smooth ride. You effectively keep the same ground clearance, with an improvement in handling.
Then some people thought it would look cool on anything, and now you see 22 inch wheels on 4 wheel drive trucks and Ford Escorts and everything else.
Well IMO I like big wheels. It makes the vehicle look better. I know some people don't like it but thats there opinion. I know they make 24's and Ive seen some 26's in mag.'s. The Harley truck probably rides just as good as your truck with 16's or 17's. I can not confirm that though but Im sure it rides good. If you like big tires then there are tires for you with big rims.
Actually, I think you get a smoother ride with a larger diameter wheel and tire, because there is more surface on the ground. I believe that's what I heard. I do know they improve handling because of the stiffer sidewalls. I myself don't care to much for the big wheels on stock vehicles. I do think some 19.5's would be alright because they are able to carry more of a load, except tires are very spendy. I believe that larger wheels and tires can have a negative effect on breaking, because there is more mass to slow down and get stopped. I guess it's all up to personal tastes though. I think they look good on some custom cars and trucks though.
Doesn't have to have a more powerful braking system. If I put slicks on my truck and slammed on the brakes I would stop a lot faster, more tire on the ground but i'd still have the same brakes. They just don't lock up as quickly. A tire with a large sidewall will ride better than a low profile tire. The tire absorbes bumps, the less tire, the less absorbency.
No you don't sound like a old fogey to me. Just like you have some tast.I also don't like those huge 20,21,22 inch wheels either.I think they are just ugly and look like crap to me.I also could think of alot of other things i could spend all that cash on for my truck.
Some custom 2wd trucks "yes" only if the purpose is for handling with a lower profile tire. 4x4's "NO" please stop slamming the 4wd Expy's with dub's. I think it is a waste of a good truck.
IMHO, Dan
The reason vehicles with larger tires do not stop quicker is not due to contact patch, but, because of leverage. More conatct patch equals better braking.
If you hold a stick 12 inches long in one hand and I try to bend it out of your hand with both my hands, I will have a hard time of it. If the stick is now 48 inches long, it will be a lot easier for me to overcome your clamping force because of leverage. Brakes work the same way. If I put two hands on the stick (dual calipers) now you have a much tougher time, even with both your hands and 48 inches of stick.
i dont know man, i think the big rims look pretty cool. Its something new. I think it would be nice to put them on a street rod, like build up an old couger and put some 20's on it, and have racing stripes on the car, damn i want an old merc couger now.
