I would recommend the 1.15 over the ported housing. Like i said above, the OPs surge is at the lower RPM range, so the ported housing will not help him much.
Hmmm... is the 38R with the 1.00 housing only good for chipped stock trucks?
I'm gonna be putting nozzles on a set of AC's and installing a DP-Tuner along with a modded 17... what's y'all's input on this? 1.00, ported 1.00, or 1.15? The reason I'd wanna hop my truck up is for even more power in the low end so that I don't have to go down to 3rd much unless I'm towing heavy... would a ported 1.00 do the trick?
I have stock AC's, 38R (1.0 housing), Termy modded 17, AFE Big Boost filter, 4" exhaust, and live tuning. I tow a 10k lb travel-trailer and dump trailer without any surge issues whatsoever.
Also, FWIW, I'm with Ken. I'd go with a 1.15 housing before I ported my 1.0 housing.
I would still like to know if the OP has his wastegate rod tightened all the way or not... I don't know if it's related to surge or not, but I'm still curious.
Mine is as tightened down as Clay could manage, and lemme tell you, I watched him crank down on that sumbitch like it had stolen his last dollar and he was wringing it outta the rod.
I have never had surge with the 1.15 on the 38R. And I have towed light and heavy loads.
Another point for the 1.15 housing! How's your low-end BTW? I'd really like to have more low-end then I do right now and not have to downshift quite as much... I know that it's limited as to how much can be done after it drops off into 4th, but hopefully I can get a bit more outta the truck with stage-2's!
Nope, just need to hit the O/D button on the shifter. The 38R comes with a ported housing already, and I have not personally used the extra porting offered by other companies before.
I did not recall seeing any surge relief (porting) in the compressor housing on my 38r. Was this something Garrett updated on their newer ones?
Uh, I think I have had the 38R as long as or longer than most here. I have the 1.15 housing and it can be a spoolup dog like I have posted back when I got it. It has never surged with this setup but the around town driving requires you to recognize the lag and be sure to not get caught napping or you will watch folks drive away.
Now to the OP, I also was aware that the 38R with the stock housing could surge despite the gains. As Clay said, with this setup do not lug the truck or install a 1.15 housing which goes back to the first paragraph. Even so, do not lug the truck with whatever turbo dude!
Been reading the thread and looking at the pics. Specifically the last one Roland posted. I don't have a good pic of my housing on the stock turbo, but I konw for sure that it has the groove Clay mentioned, but it also has the four crescent shaped slots milled out which connect to that groove. The one in Roland's picture doesn't look like that passage is open, rendering the groove cut on the 38R housing useless. If that's the case, no wonder a 38R will surge....
Or am I off base with my thinking and view point of Roland's picture here?
I have the 38R w/1.0 exhaust housing and DieselSite ported shroud, Adrenaline, RR, and stock sticks. I don't get any surge in any towing condition ever. But, I don't try to pull the 5er up a 6%-10% grade under 2k rpms. 2250-2500 rpms is the sweet spot on my truck. I didn't ever hear the DS ported shroud was for high boost and high rpms until after I bought it with the turbo last summer. What ever it was intended for, my setup works for what I do.
