When you guys are talking about surge......can someone define it for me?
If I get into it hard my boost needle will get into the upper teens and start bouncing around like a SOB while the sound is something similar to someone waving their hand in front of a high pressure air hose (like one of those cans to blow out dust or an air compessor)........sorry that is the best I can describe it. Is that "surge"?
Im not sayin that the turbo is junk. Im just saying that the surge that i am experiencing with mine sucks. ha ha ha! I previuosly had a stock turbo with a Wicked Wheel and a 1.0 exhaust housing and never had it surge. I really like how fast the spool up is on the 38R but just need to address the surge issue and all is good. There has to be something that can help this issue?

Is your wastegate rod tightened all the way like most guys do with theirs? I don't know if it's even related, but I'm just curious...
Like I said in my post, contact Bob Riley @ Dieselsite. He offers porting for the 38r compressor housing. The porting is like that of the ATS compressor housing and what makes it effective at eliminating surge. Talk to Bob (tech line 352-257-1669), I'm sure he can help you out.
Hmmm... is the 38R with the 1.00 housing only good for chipped stock trucks? The point of the 1.15 housing is to change the RPM range the turbo spools up at better as well as open up the exhaust when bigger sticks are installed... if that fixes the surge problems, then do I need to go with one when I get around to doing my truck? I'm gonna be putting nozzles on a set of AC's and installing a DP-Tuner along with a modded 17... what's y'all's input on this? 1.00, ported 1.00, or 1.15? The reason I'd wanna hop my truck up is for even more power in the low end so that I don't have to go down to 3rd much unless I'm towing heavy... would a ported 1.00 do the trick?
I have 250cc hybrids with a 38R and have little to no surge issues, however, i dont tow much. When i have, i didnt have any surge issues. my 38R has a 1.0 housing on it.
However, like i said, the 1.15 will help surge at the lower RPM ranges. Some people swear by the 1.15. Im considering the 1.15 here soon for a little cooler EGTs, should help some there

I would still like to know if the OP has his wastegate rod tightened all the way or not... I don't know if it's related to surge or not, but I'm still curious.
The 1.15 A/R housing is a great option for the 38R and we do stock it, but it may cause a little lag with Stage 1 or smaller injectors. It will help the low end surge issues and also lower backpressure and EGT's.
I really think the issue here is rpm range. If you dog your truck you can make a stock turbo, 38R, 42 etc surge. I can get my 38R to surge empty if I am below 2000 rpm and pulling a small grade. The key on any turbo is not to lug the truck, if you keep the rpms up you shouldn't have an issue.

With that in mind, then his tuning is not allowing his truck to downshift when it needs to causing the truck to lug and the turbo to surge, right? Needs a live tune, maybe? I'd be curious, though, as to whether porting the 38R will eliminate the surge or at least help it. If so, then you'd have quite a bit of low end!

Nope, just need to hit the O/D button on the shifter. The 38R comes with a ported housing already, and I have not personally used the extra porting offered by other companies before.

Who's got the guts to port their "already ported" 38R!?
With the setup I mentioned in my post above, what would you have me do? I want it to be fast, but I intend to pull alot as I already do a fair amount of hauling as it is... a set of AC's with nozzles is a slightly smaller Stage-2. You already know the reason I want a set of AC's... I've talked to you about it before. But yeah, 1.00 or 1.15, Clay?
Anybody have any feedback on porting the 38R even more?
