so anyone with a 460 and long tube headers how hard is it to remove the starter? and is there a smaller starter that can be bought if it is a bit difficult to remove?

Is it a 4x4 or 4x2?

I just had to remove my high torque starter and put it back in. It was a real hassle. My truck is a 4x2 with a 400/C6 and long tube headers. I imagine a 460 is even tighter than my 400. The headers make it difficult to get to the top bolt. The top bolt inserts from the rear and goes forward and threads into the starter. I use a couple feet of extentions on my ratchet and access the bolt from way in the back just in front of my tranny crossmember. If you haven't bought headers yet, spend the money for short tube headers. You will thank yourself whenever you have to make repairs.

IMO fenderwell exit are the way to go, no hassle getting around the xfer case routing the exhaust pipe, or getting to the starter or anything else.

I don't have experience with fenderwells, but if I was doing it over, I'd probably go with them. As for shorty's compared to long tube though, be advised that you'll develop more low end torque with long tubes.

Fenderwells are easy to install and get out side the frame, only issue is tire rub in certain applications. I will never use inside the frame headers again.

Depending on how crazy you're wanting to get, I built a set of headers for my F350/4x4. I had lowered the motor a few inches in the frame to help with driveline angles and set out to make a set of headers that cleared the starter. It worked out well, starter is easy to remove with no heat issues, but it was not the easiest of projects. It wasn't that hard, just time consuming fitting all the little bends and pieces to make the primary tubes. I haven't really seen a great set of bolt on long tube headers for these trucks that don't have some kind of clearance issues.
