I recently started having problems with my Expedition rough Idling. I checked the codes from the internal computer when the check engine light came on and it read p0171 telling me the system ran lean. After replacing the vacuum tubing, cleaning the MAF sensors and air filter, I replaced the spark plugs. In cylanders 2 and 4 the boot on the coil pack was covered in a honey-yellow like fluid. After drying out the cylanders and replacing the spark plugs, the car ran just fine. No more rough idle. Until about an hour into the drive. I checked the codes once the light came on and now they read p0301 (spark plug in cylander 1 not firing) and p0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold). I checked plug number one and there is not a thing wrong, the wires are in the correct place and the plug is brand new. Then I decided to check cylanders 2 and 4 again, miraculously there was fluid in them, but this time it is a watery milky white color. I checked all the tubes around bank one of the engine and nothing is leaking, the top of the block is dry, so where is this fluid coming from? The injectors?
Do you have the yellow long-life antifreeze in your truck? If so, and if you're 100% sure the heater hoses aren't leaking, then you could be looking at having to replace the intake manifold gasket.
So the injectors are ruled out. Sadly, the antifreeze is green in color, so I know it isn't that. Unless old antifreeze from seven months ago is still in the system. Is that possible even tough the system was flushed with water for half an hour?
How willing are you to try something new? I worked in a garage for about 15 years. If we had a question of weather something was leaking anti-freeze, and could not detect an obvious color, we gave it a quick taste test. If you are game... rub your fingers on the substance in question, then lick it with the tip of your tongue, that is where your taste buds for sweet are, and anti freeze has a really sweet taste to it. Be sure and rinse your mouth thouroghly if you attempt it.
Just my 2 cents worth.
