I own a 1998 expo, that I have owned 13 or more years. I love driving it and the room it offers inside. It has 254,000 miles on it, and has never given me any major problems, til recently. It gave me no warning signs it just quit pulling one day. I tried putting in 4 hi and it pulled for a short distance, then stopped pulling again. So I put it in 4 lo, and it started pulling again. I have talked to several shops and they said it is defintley in the transfer case, but it could be the shift motor. Any ideas anyone? I'm trying to handle it my self if possible.

I believe xfer case is for engagement options of front wheels only and rear wheels will always be engaged on these vehicles (1st Gen XP, probably applicable to all 'normally' RWD 4x4 vehicles). No pull sounds like slipping AT issue, or fubar'ed AT in general. For most xfer case problems reported on the forum, issue on that usually is failure to engage 4x4 (hi or low) and binding or failure to disengage 4x4.
