I am at my wits end. I have a 1998 Exp. 4.6L 4x4. I was having a problem with the truck violently missing causing the truck to shake and jerk. The Check Engine light came on and the code pointed to a misfiring plug. I change the spark plugs, plug wires, both O2 sensors and put fuel injection cleaner in the gas. It then ran fine for about a week then started the same thing again including the same code from the check engine light about a missfiring spark plug. I then replaced the two coil packs thinking that one of those was misfiring. It again ran fine for about a week and has now started up the same thing. I don't know what to try next. Is it still related to the ignition system or should I be looking somewhere else like the fuel filter or EGR valve. I have read several posts with similar issues but with no clear resolution.
I am experiencing a similar problem. I get a P0304 #4 cylinder misfire. The plugs, plug wires and a coil pack have been changed.
I do a lot of my own repairs, so I treated myself to a Christmas present and ordered a Nemisys scanner. I hate spending money to take it to a shop. I'll let you know if I get if figured out. The scanner should arrive in about a week.
Thank you for your suggestions. That is the exact code that my truck pulled again last night. I took it to a friend and as we were playing with it, we spayed brake cleaner into the intake and it cleared the problem right up. My friend told me that he thought I had a leak and that the brake cleaner was wetting the valve causing it to "swell" back up and "plug" the leak temporarily. My Exp. has 113,000 on it with no warranty. Replacing the valve sounds expensive. I hope there is something else wrong with it.
Hi Mine has done the same thing with the idleing , missing, and also stopping like at a dead stop at a stop sign but read the manual on it and all of the trouble shoot things said check vacuum well I did and I found a leak under the front passenger side fender wall but dont know what those lines are called but it also goes to the a/c -heater and under the throttle body cover that is all what i found out today will let you know more later but i know when I stopped the vacuum up with my finger , the moter would go up and down so that is bound to be the problem so maybe you might wanna check for a vacuum leak with a piece of water hose just run it all over the motor just listen real close for a hissing sound and my friend said you can put soapy water on the vacuum lines and it will bubble and dry up at the leak hope this may help you
