What is the normal cylander compression supposed to be in a 1977 302? I can't find my chart anywhere for this. I looked in my Chiltons and can't find the information. I'm getting 140 - 150 in each cylander. Please excuse spelling, I can't find spell check either!
Thanks Paul. That's good news. I know I saw a chart somewhere but can't find it again.
Anyway, I was having skipping/faultering trouble when you gas it which was getting progressively worse over 3000 miles to the point where it was missing at idle. I checked gas and that looked fine so I checked spark, that was fine too. I checked slap on the timing chain as best I could turning the crank but didn't find any slack that way so my heart sank as I expected to find bad valves. But the compression was all over 140psi.
I put everything back together and now the truck drives out fine! All I can figure is the spark plugs might have been a little loose before and now they are tight, or when I pulled and checked all the lines on the vacume block, I fixed a leak somehow, or when I broke a head connector off one of the plug wires during the compression check and replaced it, it may have been broke from before. It's a mystery, but all I know is I got 'er back like she was! Didn't mean to ramble but I'm feeling so relieved that I thought I would share!
Mike.
Yes, 1 plug missing occasionally for whatever reason makes a big impact. Sometimes the simple things are easily overlooked. A good way to verify your ignition system is solid from the coil to the plugs is with the engine running in complete darkness. Even a small arc between a wire and valve cover for example is instantly visible. This will also show you where you need to keep adjacent wires seperated.
