I'm sure this has been asked before...but here goes anyway...can you bench test an egr valve?

I had not checked with Parts Guy Ed. That is where I got the blue spring upgrade kit, but I just ordered it online and never talked with anyone. That is significantly cheaper than the Ford dealers I called. I checked with five different places in OK and TX and the price was the same at each place.

I asked about testing the EGR valve and was told that it could not be tested other than in the vehicle. I am not sure of the accuracy of this statement but I am not a tech and just do not know.

From what I've read on FTE.....

I would *NOT* order this from ebay.
There is a "new" updated part sold by Ford (w/pink dot),
you don't know which version you'll be getting from ebay.

just my .02

You do know which version from Ebay, you just ask before buying. I bought one 2 years ago sealed in the Motorcraft box for $60 off Ebay. Pink dot color coded on the bakelite tower, along with the bar code 4279

Second, it seems to be the EGR valve. I took it off and cleaned it but it really did not need it. Bought new gaskets/o-rings and put it back together. Took it for a drive and had the same problem at about the same time it took earlier. Got back home and waited for the truck to cool down and unplugged the EGR valve. Took it for a drive the next day and no problems! Took it the same place as before and tried to make the drive conditions as similar as possible. It seems like that the EGR valve was definitely the issue. I have a check engine light now but I can live with that until I get the $230.77 to replace the EGR valve.

Once again, tha nks for all the GREAT help!
I don't think you should get a CEL as a result of your EGR valve being unplugged on your 2004 truck. Mine has been unplugged for a couple of years with no light. I do get EGR codes when I read them, but no light.

There are certain PCM calibrations of the 03/04 trucks that will give a CEL for the EGR being unplugged, Repubic of Kalifornia trucks being one.

The CEL actually came on before I unplugged the EGR valve.

Hi,
Jumping in here as I have a couple recent posts with the same issues.
My question is can an EGR valve be cleaned up and still not function?

Now mine was nothing but dry sooty, not caked. The manifold was dry too. 93k miles it all looked good considering it was an EGR valve.
I'm still getting occasional hiccupping. Scanguage Messured and Demand readings of EGR are pretty much identical.
Should I just go buy one and have a spare??

Problems after blue spring upgrade

I had a leak on the fuel regulator. Changed the gasket and did the blue spring upgrade since I had it apart. Engine was sluggish on take off after the spring upgrade but ran fine at highway speeds. Decided to take the regulator apart and make sure I didn't install something wrong. All looked good. Took out EGR valve and cleaned it. Started engine and let warm up to operating temp. As soon as I took off, the engine power went to nothing. I barely got it back to the shop. I unplugged the EGR valve, but still have same issue. I'm guessing a piece of carbon may be stuck in the turbo, but I don't know how to check that. Any ideas?

Thanks
