I had an opportunity to do the blue spring upgrade last Thursday. Everything went okay and when I finished I took the truck out for a drive. I only drove it a few miles and once it warmed up I would accelerate quickly, just to put it through the paces. The truck sit for a couple of days and then my daughter drove it and she called from the side of the road telling me she was afraid the truck was about to blow up. I went and swapped vehicles with her and drove it home. It did not do anything until I was nearly home then it "bucked" and blew black smoke every where. I let off the accelerator and it cleared up but then did it two more times before I got it home. When I got it home I took it back apart and found the little black "sleeve" that the spring and brass fitting go through was beat up some (I probably did it on the install). Since I still had the one I pulled out I used it and put everything back together. Now the truck does the same thing but only occasionally and intermittently. When the problem occurs there is a "popping" sound and the truck loses power. If I let off the accelerator the problem stops and may occur again immediately or not for some time. Does this sound like a problem anyone else has had? Sorry for the novel!
Doesn't sound like a fuel pressure problem to me. Sounds more like an EGR valve or turbo that needs cleaning. Hard to know without knowing fuel pressure before and after spring install. By "sleeve" do you mean o-ring/gasket that's on the brass cup/piston?

Thanks for all the replies. I was wondering if it might be the EGR valve and it just coincided with the spring change. I am off on a job right now and will not be home until next Thursday. When I get home I will pull the EGR valve and check it. I cleaned it a year ago and it could probably use it again anyway. I have not had any problems with it in the past and it may need replacing. Once I pull it if does not appear to be the problem I will unplug it and give it the Italian tune-up before I replace it.
As for the black sleeve...it is the hard plastic piece that slides into the fuel filter housing but I would probably not describe it as a gasket or o-ring. The piece I am refering to slides into the filter housing and then the brass fitting slides into it and then the spring fits into the brass fitting.
Some people might not recognize the black plastic insert, because it was only in earlier model years.
In earlier years, a black plastic insert went into the filter housing, then the brass poppet valve went into it.
In later model years, the aluminum housing was redesigned and the insert was eliminated. The shape of the insert was basically molded (or machined) into the housing itself.
I learned this when I replaced my '04 housing with the '05 one texans sold me.
First, thanks for all the input. You guys really pointed me in the right direction.
Second, it seems to be the EGR valve. I took it off and cleaned it but it really did not need it. Bought new gaskets/o-rings and put it back together. Took it for a drive and had the same problem at about the same time it took earlier. Got back home and waited for the truck to cool down and unplugged the EGR valve. Took it for a drive the next day and no problems! Took it the same place as before and tried to make the drive conditions as similar as possible. It seems like that the EGR valve was definitely the issue. I have a check engine light now but I can live with that until I get the $230.77 to replace the EGR valve.
