Tranny, Torque Conv., Code P1711, WTH??

This is gonna be long......apology in advance!!

One day last week, my wife leaves the house in her 2003 EXP 5.4 4WD 130K, and doens't notice anything out of the ordinary. Takes off from a red light and feels like there is a lag in speed (like she's not pressing the gas hard enough), then once it shifts into second gear, everything seems okay....after 3-5 more stop and goes (they are yielding the same slow go), she pulls thru a bank drive thru, stops on the other side with car in gear and makes out a deposit slip and then proceeds to take off (sat there for about 3 minutes) and hears this harsh pop/bang (think of a jack stand in the back of the car following over in a turn...that thud noise). Well, she knows that something is wrong now. She pulls over because there is a clicky noise now. My dad is with her and jumps out and says pull forward a little, which she does, but needs more room, so she puts it in reverse and that's when it sounds like the tranny has fallen out. She then proceeds to pull forward and the clicky noise is there and backs up and the grinding noise is there again. Long story short, she got it home, then we drove it to a friend of friend's shop and it turned off on me at a light and sounded awful the whole way there and back to our house....we took it there so they could plug it up and the only code they got was: P1711 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor out of Self-Test Range. Which we know the car was at operating temp, so why wasn't it? Also, for a long time, my wife has been telling me she heard a whine from the rear under acceleration....was that the TQ? Any ideas on what might be the problem.....TQ, tranny, ??? I hate to replace a tranny if it's not that. Tranny was flushed @ 77k and the tranny fluid showed at the DON NOT FILL mark, was red and didn't smell bad/burnt. Any help/ideas would be appreciated!! Thanks

Sounds like a failed torque converter to me. Try posting in the F-150 section, you may get more help there.
