Hey all, I am days away from ordering my first ever truck from factory. Going to be getting a 2011 F150 Supercrew FX4 6.5 box, pretty much loaded up. I can't decide which engine, 5.0L or Ecoboost!? I have driven a new 2011 5.0L and love it over my 5.4L I have now. Lots of power and a very nice truck. But the dealership guy and some of my friends are saying the ecoboost is the way to go. I've seen the numbers and watched the videos, but I'm still a little skeptical with this in a truck. What are you guys thinking?
uhmmm...go with he 6.2 , but you'll need to start with at least the Lariat trim line. This is of course very biased of me as I am currently waiting for delivery of my own 6.2L truck.
Actually, seriously though, if I were you, I would definitely choose the 5.0 if you're set on the FX4. The Ecoboost seems too "experimental" at this stage.
I personally am going to order a FX4 Extended Cab 5.0L this summer. I have driven both Ecoboost and 5.0L and the 5.0L provides more than enough power for me, and gets comparable fuel econmy to the Ecoboost, and lastly you don't have to give up that sweet V8 rumble with the 5.0L.
Sure the Ecoboost has its advantage's such as you can get it with max tow package, and its got that broad diesel like torque curve. But IMO that's about it. When I did the test drive of both trucks I did a 10 minute highway run with the 5.0L and the Ecoboost, and they were only seprated by about 1mpg acording to the trucks ''Avg Fuel Econ Display''.
But to each his own, Just don't let the dealership or your friends force you into anything you don't feel comfortable with. If I were you I would wait and drive the Ecoboost first ''if you haven't already'' and then go from there. But remember the Ecoboost in the Flex and Taures SHO is not the same as the Ecoboost in the F-150. The F-150's Ecoboost is designed to produce much more torque than either the Flex or SHO. So I would test it with an F-150 instead of a Flex or SHO.
Both are sweet driving, but the 5.0L is the engine for me. I'll post my review I wrote up of all the trucks so you can read it if you want.
For comparison a 2WD 5.0L F-150 is rated at 15/21mpg
All of the motors have been in development for a long time, the EB and 5.0 have been out in the Flex, Taurus, and Mustang for a few years too, coupled with the 100k powertrain warranty, there is nothing to worry about! I went with the 5.0

When did this start? Your guess is as good as mine. I bought a new 2011 F150 5.0L Lariat Super Crew last Saturday, and...
Just to verify (cuz I was informed by the dealer what the various warranty's are), I just waltzed out to the garage, looked in the Warranty Guide. It sez on page 8 that the Powertrain Warranty is 5/60,000.
According to page 8, only the Powerstroke Diesel Powertrain Warranty is 5/100,000.
AFAIK, only Government Motors has a 5/100,000 Powertrain Warranty on all their piles.
Just figure on how many miles your gonna have the truck. Then figure your cost per mile for each engine but add $750 to the cost of ecoboost. The 5.0 will have alittle more money in the oil changes. So some of that will offset the 750.
My diesel was a 7k option, but my saving on all the miles I have towed have paid it off long ago. I would not hesitate for $750.
I think an argument could be made either direction (5.0 or EB) Personally I went for the EB (we ordered our new rig last week).
I think personal choice and inputting your own circumstances into the decision is what's called for.
For me it was about getting the very best MPG I could, along with the comfort factor for long trips. I'm also a person who keeps a vehicle for a LONG time (provided it suits my needs and I like it). I did struggle with the EB being a "new" power plant in the F150, but I'm also purchasing an extended warranty. That way if my gut instinct that the EB is going to be a great engine is proven wrong, I'll have the warranty to fall back on.
Like everyone else, I love power...but in my case, that power is no good if I can't afford to feed the engine. I have a 77 F150 4x4 that sits most of the time behind my Blacksmith shop... I love the old truck, but at 8 MPG, I simply cannot afford to feed it, so it is relegated to instances when I need to haul a heavy load. Having driven a Toytoa 4x4 truck as my daily driver for the past 12 years, the EB F150 is gona seem like a rocket to me...and the icing on the cake is the MPG will be as good or better than the Toyota.
I think if you do a little research, take your circumstances into consideration, and maybe even add a little "gut instinct" into the equation, you'll make the decision that is right for you. I don't mid saying that I spent many months deciding....the last time I spent this much money on a single item, was when I purchased my home!
Some good insight here. I've done a lot of research in the past day or two and I think I'm going to go with EB. So since it's 0% financing this month, I'm off to get it ordered tomorrow! Thanks guys.
