I recently replaced head gasket and put on rebuilt heads. I have been going easy on her for a few weeks now. Today I put a little more load on her. Ran her up to 70mph a few times. While I was coasting downhill into a turn she started to pop a few times so I let in the clutch and coasted to a stop. Truck would not start. I noticed the distrubutor had rotated maybe 30 degrees counter clockwise looking from the front. I centered it back to the mark I had when I had taken the heads off. It still didnt start, so I took off the Dist cap to find the rotor wasn't moving. I dont have time to tear her apart tonight. Any common problems like this?
Thank for any input.
Sometimes the roll pin that holds the distributor gear to the shaft will shear and cause this issue. You'll have to pull the distributor to see. If that's the case, you'll want to find out what caused it to shear in the first place - sometimes this happens when the oil pump locks up.
Sounds to me that you could have one of several problems.
1) Broken distributor shaft
2) Broken or stripped distributor gear
3) Broken streched timing chain
4) broken camshaft
I would reccomend pulling the distributor and going from there.......
Besides the dizzy roll-pin which is more or less fairly common, the Camshaft dowel can shear causing the timing gear to loosen to the point of no longer being able to rotate the cam.
I had just commented to my son right before this happened that my oil pressure looked real good though(per the gauge!). I'll pull the distributor tomorrow and we can go from there. Thx all.

I pulled the Distributor. Shaft was frozen and lwr gear spins. Got another distributor in last night. Installed and started her up, smoked white excessively but oil press came up. I tweeked timing and idle a bit. Had it running good after she warmed up. turned her off to tighten the distributor bolt down, started up and acts like its out of time. Belches and sputters, wont run worth a darn. Shut her down. Try again today. The brand new cap was real tight putting on, I'll dbl ck that its not bad or put the old one back on, put the dist make sure she's still ok, I may be off a tooth? Any ideas?

Well I found that my son didnt push the rotor down firmly on the Distrubutor so I pushed it down all the way, the rotor fit alot better. I tried starting up the truck. She belched out about a qt of antifreeze out the l/h exhaust! It started but ran rough. So I shut her down now what?
Hey Bullit, yes brand freekin new coolant darn!!! As you recall I just worked over the top end(redid the heads etc.)last month. My son has drove it around everyday for 2 weeks and it ran. I took it out 1 day, 10 miles!and the distributor freezes up I put in a new one and also my t stat I had taken out for a hot problem troubleshooting and now this!!!lol the t stat installation may be the coolant issue now.
I'm moving to AK in a week and wanted this truck going for the kids, if the snow got too deep out here in the country. She keeps acting up and I'll scrap her!!!!! now that almost everything has been replaced!lol
My money is on head gasket. Did you re-torque them after you ran it a little? Sometimes a backfire (especialy if you were moving right along) could blow the gasket out.
darn it!!! I hadnt done that, I was gone for 2 weeks and plum forgot! I wrote it down and put it on the dash but cleaned it off to put my new dash cover on the other day!!!
I hate getting old!!!! I'll get torquing w/ my fingers crossed!

I did re torque the head bolts but no help althouh I did get 1/4 - 1/2 turns on alot of them. I finally got back in town to work on it again. Just pulled the intake manifold and noticed a crack on one on the intake mating flanges! Where can I get one of those fast? anything lighter I hope!!!! Anything special I need to do or will they just bolt on ?
Now I wonder if I should pull the heads back off to double ck their condition? At least I'm not outside and 0 degrees now!!!!
