rebuilt the carb and have been learning alot about ford and their crazy ways-it is the holley 4160 base carb for ford and the right rebuild kit with correct info is like ice water in hell, anyway after taking the carb off 20 times for adjustment ,leaks ,more leaks, air leaks ,ect ,it ran but pops and back fires, dogs out when given gas ,and small fires from the carb that worrys the wife
1-no vacumme leaks
2-floats checked and dbl checked
3-timing set to the best it can get till i get money for a tune up
4 - vacumme is o.k. around 15-20 @ idle.does drop off when reved
so I did screw in the idle mixture screw in on the passanger side all the way and it died so I thought the pv was ok so I went to check the driverside idle screw "so that both sides would be set the same to be balanced "it was already closed from the start ,
so the question is -is the power valve blow or what else should I check and because its a ford power valve were can I find the anti blow out proof power valve
thanks
Holley.com has a good video for tuning these carbs. If you screw the idle mixtures screws in and it still runs the power valve is bad. The blow out preventer is a screw assembly with a ball in it that screws into the base of carb from underside. If yours is not already equiped with this, the screw hole would need to be drilled out and tapped for new screw. This is show on Holley.com also.
There are sooo many reasons that could be happening, were it the power valve it would be running very rich, barely idle if at all, and if it is that, a holley power valve is what you need.. Tune it with the video, and then see what you have.. sounds like an accelerator pump adjustment at the very least.. and after backfiring it probably does need a power valve..
If your power valve was gone, you wouldn't get that decent of a vacuum reading at idle. In fact, it would barely run at all. If the power valve blows, the idle will be very rough, and you have to keep the pedal down to keep it running. Your situation is the opposite. I agree with wdfp; it sounds like an accelerator pump issue, and it would be good measure to replace the power valve anyway, since it's backfired so much.
