low power?

I'm not really sure what to expect so possibly nothing is wrong here. My kid has a 93 lwb IDI truck with the E4OD trans. It's 2 wd for now.
Maybe I'm spoiled with the powerstroke but this thing sure seems gutless. It doesn't have a turbo on it. When I step on it at 65 It's like looking at a star trek show where they go into warp speed and everything is slow motion. I need to pull the injector pump to fix some leaks and maybe replace it. I know the injectors are original too. It's got almost 400k on it. We have replaced the fuel and air filter recently and it's running nice. Just gutless. Any idea?

Also does anyone have a part number for the screen on the intake under the air filter? And for the air cleaner bottom gasket? I made a new one of those temporarily out of a piece of vac tubing but it needs the right one in it. Thanks.

While the old IDI won't compair to the stroke, it should do better than that. Is the injector pump original also? At 400K , the pump and injectors need changed out. For best preformance, and fuel milage it is recomended to change them after 100K. If you can find a used turbo system it will really wake that old IDI up.

I believe they are all original. My son practically stole it from our neighbor last year, 500 bucks, and all I can remember the guy ever having fixed was the transmission about 50k miles ago. It got rebuilt by a good shop here. I was a Ford mechanic for a long time and worked the diesel bay back in the mid to late 90's but I honestly never had to do much to these other than fixing leaks so I got a lot to learn.

Are the injectors worth rebuilding? I can do them on tractors easy enough. I even still have my test rig that I made while working at a case dealer. I've done some of their IP's too but for the price of these I'd rather just replace it. They are only about as much as one of my injectors.

Also for timing? I seem to remember using an adapter that went on the number 1 injector line and hooked to my timing light? Is that correct? Anyone know where to get one these days or do I even need it?
The kid wants a turbo bad. Problem is I could have given him one of our powerstrokes but I didn't for a reason. I keep remembering how I drove when I was his age and all the STUPID accidents I had. He's no different at all. Except I was driving mustangs back then. I had a 65 coupe, 65 fastback, 65 shelby, 69 boss 429 and finaly a 91 saleen before I woke up and saw my insurance bill. This kid is getting started with trucks! If the turbo will help with fuel mileage then I'm all for it but if it gets too much faster I might have to govern it down a bit. I'm so mean. He does need to be able to pull the horse trailer though and sometimes the camper in my pic here. He's going off to college here in a couple months and may take them with him.

could just be me but my buddies 94 stroke has a hell of a time keeping up with me till about 55 then he catches me. but i also have a 3sp so i would be approaching my limit soon anyway haha. In a race to 55 he hasnt had his nose in front of me. that is with my old ip, once i get it replaced and timed to my specs, he wont be near me. i think its 210 for your factory stock hp numbers. If you replace the downpipe and intercool you can see the 250's but with stock, it is a measly 15 or so hp over our NA motors.
With my mods, i woke mine up just fine so no complaints here. my latest timing set about three weeks ago will let me powerbrake on dry pavement no prob. I would replace the ip, injectors, stock lift pump, to start. Then take a look at my exhaust/intake in my pics to see what can really help this beast breathe.

As for the injectors, most will say just go new, as they are not that much more than rebuilt. BB code are what are recomended, for both turboed and nonturboed. Up here I can get a pump rebuilt for around $450. On line Pensicola Diesel has a rebuilt for $350, with no core but I have heard mixed revews on them. You can get a little more juice from them if you turn the fuel up, but that gets the exhaust hot if you go too much. This is done by turning the allen head screw in 1 to 2 flats. The screw is located under the little triangle plate on the injector pump.
As for timing The pulse adapter for the timing light is getting kind of hard to find, You can get it pretty close if you time it by ear. When first starting on a cold engine you shuld get a powerstroke sounding rattle that quiets down when the cold advance kicks off when the engine warms up. Rotating the pump top towards the passenger side advances the timing. A little goes a long way when moving the pump, going about the width of the timing line on the pump is about 2 degrees if I remember right.

400 miles on the original injectors, wow surprised the truck still moves at all!

I've been through 2 sets of injectors on my '90 7.3 in 377k miles, I am also still on the original IP.

I would of needed a new set a while ago but never bothered, as I knew if I was to replace them, I don't think the old pump would of lasted a long time after that. Since I was retireing the truck soon, I left it.

When I restore it, it'll get a complete tune up!

I wouldn't worry about a turbo givving "to much" power to these old pigs!

That little slide in camper shouldn't slow down a well tuned N/A IDI much at all.

I use to have one on my F250 before getting an IDI motorhome, my camper was a full size 1978 Shamrock 12ft heavy box! Pulled it up hills fine with my 5 speed 4.10's

With 400,000 on the engine, I would not put a turbo on. That's a lot of miles to suddenly start putting pressure to.

It may only be 10 lbs of boost but it's the compression ratio increase with the turbo on top of that 400,000 that will give problems.

I would get it running good, fix any leaks, make sure it's getting air in and exhaust out efficiently, of course any safety items that need fixed and call it good for as long as the engine (or truck) lasts.

I also remember my teenage years along with raising 2 kids through the teenage years. Sure wasn't pretty sometimes although my grand daughter seems to be making up for the stupid years of my own kids, she turned 17 a few months ago.
