performance problems

I thought I fixed this last week when I took apart the ipr valve and cleaned it but on the way home yesterday it did it again.

Here's what is happening with as much detail as I can muster.

Lower power, boost gauge not as high as normal, light black smoke. Always when fully warmed up and so far has only been when over 80 degrees outside. Temp gauge goes a little higher like just past the M when it is normally on the R. Hardly any load on it, just accelerating from a stop or pulling up over a ramp on the highway.
Boost on this one ramp is usually about 8 psi at 65 mph on the cruise. When it's acting up it only gets 3-4 and smokes black a little and feels gutless. It's very intermittant.

I have a new air filter 6637, fuel filter-motorcraft, injectors resealed a couple months ago, rebuilt turbo, replaced wiring harnesses, oil is motorcraft w/ less than 1000 miles on it and is full with the proper dipstick in it.
All of that was for other problems. It's running a ton better than when I got it but I need to get this problem licked. It's an eec4 computer and I don't have a breakout box anymore. I am just lost without a datastream to look at. Can anyone help me figure this out?

I just took off the ebp sensor and cleaned it out, hooked it up out of the hole and ran the engine, got a slight feel of exhaust out of the tube so it's not completely plugged. Tried to run a piece of baling wire down it, that's not happening. The ebpv works fine so I doubt this is related anyway.
I also swapped the map sensor with another one that worked fine on the truck it was on. Just for the heck of it. Will let everyone know how it runs over the next couple days.

Can the air temp sensor cause this? How about the oil temp? I also thought there was a baro pressure sensor under the dash but I can't find one. Is there supposed to be one for 94?

No, not at all. I'm sure it's not the ebpv. I know that sound. I unplugged it a few days ago too just to see.

No I wish. I have the obd2 connector like all of you but on a 94 model it is just there collecting dust. The pcm does now have the ability to power it or to give a datastream. Or anything else through it. I have to use the old eec4 connector under the hood.
I had a breakout box but not anymore. I sold it years ago. That's really the only way to get sensor readings. Without piercing wires. Not good.

Have you actually tried your OBD port, or are you assuming it won't work? Lots of guys with 94 and 95 are usning Scanguages via the OBD, myself included.

I have tried it. Mine still has the original programming. If yours is a 94 and the obd works then Ford probably updated it at some point before you got it. I used to reprogram them all the time when we had performance problems on the 94's. It's so much easier to diagnose.
Problem is, Ford dealers here no longer have the capability to reflash any of the obs trucks. So they say anyway. I've worked at one of them and asked everyone I knew and they all said the computer system they have now is different. I don't understand it when others around the country are still getting it done.
I think I am just going to buy a new one at oreilleys or something for a 97 with a stick shift. That should get it working right. It's under 200 dollars for a new pcm from them. I wish I had it right now.

I believe DP Tuner can do a PCM reflash fairly inexpensively. You might give them a call to discuss it. That was my backup plan in case my Scanguage didn't work.

I plan to do that but it's my only working vehicle right now. I can't send the computer out and not have it running. We had to rob about half the engine off my 97 so far to get this one back in shape. I just love this 4 door 4x4.

yep, i would get an MLE1 PCM('97 manual trans). since when did o-reily's have them? they told me they didn't, but then again i wouldn't trust a PCM from them anyways. Junkyard item my friend. hopefully your junkyards close to you have one b/c none of mine do!! i need an MLE1 PCM bad so that Tony can live tune my truck easier, but for now i'm stuck with the SOD4 b/c i don't wanna give the dealership $360 for a new one.

Has it acted up since you changed the map sensor? I was gonna ask if you checked the hose to but I'm gonna presume that you checked that when you changed the sensor.

It acted up twice yesterday, after I changed the map sensor. The hose is all new and not leaking. It's clamped on everwhere too and I rigged up a good fitting for the gauge on it that ain't coming apart.
MLE1 huh? I will check oreilleys now for it.
