I had an idea a couple years ago that is finally taking shape. The bed on the mud truck is starting to rust away. I did not want a standard 8 foot bed to go back on though. I wanted a bed mod that would set my truck apart from everyone elses trucks. I have always thought stepsides looked cool. In the 60s and early 70s there were 8 and 9 foot stepsides. I thought it would be cool to have a new version of this concept. I had a buddy of mine that is a body man by trade narrow an 8 foot bed 16 inches. I bought a stepside tailgate from the local junkyard for $70.00. I also have a couple of dualley fenders that will be modified to fit the bed. When these parts all come together, I will have my 8 foot stepside !!
A narrower bed means a narrow rear bumper as well. I do scrap on the side for extra money (truck money). I picked up some 3x5 box tubing that was used on a tire rack at a local garage. I used the tubing to build my bumper. The main body is done with only the bumper mounts, tag mounts and tag lights left to fabricate.
With the narrow look, I also want to add smoke stacks outside the bed behind the cab. I had a friend give me two 3 inch stainless exhaust stacks. They need some TLC, but will work perfect. These will look cool but also get my exhaust up high and out of the mud and deep water down here in Fla.!
I don't have many pics yet, but there is a pic of the bed and bumper on my cardomain page which is www.cardomain.com/ride/2429607
Check them out. I would love some feedback.
You have a beautiful truck there! I think that is a neat idea, very unique! I would love to see some pictures of that bed when it is done, I think that is going to be quite a head turner!
Hey when did you buy this rig? if you don't mind me asking. i live in Loudoun county not a stones throw from Fairfax i swear i had seen a truck just like this only saw it once could never find it again thought it was cool as hell. saw this read your description on the site and remembered. Think the idea for the old style flareside is a great idea.
