My mom has a 2001 SD 4x4 and over the summer, the shaft on bottom of the steering box sheared off (without any warning) while she was driving and hit a parked vehicle (luckily it was under 20 mph). The body work was done and a new (or re-man) box was installed and an alignment. Now when making a turn, the wheels turn more to the right than to the left. You have to make wide left turns or have to back up and turn again. Could it be a bad steering box??? Thanks!
At this point, all u can do is get the wheels straight. Remove the pittman are and count the number of turns from left to right and turn the wheel to half that and reinstall the steering arm. For example, 5 turns stop to stop would be 2.5 turns back to center.
I would really say that most of the insurance companies offer a warranty on any repairs done at their preferred shops. Usually those shops are the ones they send you too. All you have to do is call the claims agent and take it back over there for a redo... It should take them less than a day. Now if u did what I did the last time one of my trucks was wrecked....take their money and fix yourself, then you will have to warranty it yourself.
I'll run it back to the guy that did the work and explain the situation. He is a friend of mine that has done many jobs over the years. It's very possible that he just installed it but didn't check the center point. Thanks to everybody for the great info!!!
