Brown ATF :-(

Did a tranny service on my daily driver ’96 F250 4wd 7.3 and found burned smelling brown fluid and about a half an inch of gray mush stuck to the pan magnet. It’s a 20 bolt E4OD. I am very bummed to say the least. This is an adult owned and well maintained rig. Truck has just a touch over 100,000 miles and the trans was last serviced 25,000 ago.

I talked to Ernie Greene at Sav-on Trans, a very reputable shop here in PHX, and he reports that the converter is a weak point on this trans and recommends a converter that costs around $1000 bucks, about $2800 to do the entire job. This is not new feedback, but surprises me it is coming undone so soon.

Any locals here have similar experience with this particular tranny? Any advice beyond Ernie’s suggestion?

Yours in burned tranny fluid,
Jim

Good Evening Everyone. The wife & I went to a Jazz Concert on the Plaza @ Yuma Palms Shopping Complex. They hold free jazz concerts every Thursday eve through April.

Jim, I don't know what converter was recommended to you but I run a Hughes HD Towing Converter in front of my C-6. The difference in towing is really noticeable. Even empty it takes less Rs to move.

I personally would call Hughes Converters or go over & talk with them. They are right there in Phoenix. The converter for my C-6 was around $300. But I'm sure the AOD is more money. But most of the tranny shops I have talked with in Arizona use Hughes if a person wants a Hi Pro or upgraded converter.

I have tons of experience with the E4OD, AOD, C6 and C4. The E4OD is the weak link, and more so on the PSD (PowerStroke Diesels). The TC (Torque Converter) does have a heavy failure rate. Some of the more competitive brands (BTS) have a drain plug on them as an addition to the larger fins and built up converters. The E4OD is a modulated transmission (no longer the years of bands being used), but is very proned to failure with the help of heat. Larger Transcoolers are a must with our trucks! (This is also the same for the 95-96 Explorers). They get hot and start to cook the electronics , which is one of the problems. The fluid pressure is another. Under the torque load, there is a lack of pressure which allows these transmissions to slip.

Around at 75,000, usually its recommended to get the trans overhauled, or replaced. That seems to be the more common failure period of them. For 2800, I would suggets a BTS Trans. You will get one that wont need an overhaul, and you can really "put it to it"! There is one member here who has a nicely modded PS, Glenn (OldBird), and he is another good one to ask anything you need!

If you havent completely trashed your tranny, and need to get a few more miles out of it, check out "Guzzlers" web site. He talks about upgrading valve bodies, and even adding a TC lock up switch!

Bill, great news on you coming to town. Let's proceed as planned. Heck, sounds like I need to get the '64 on the road sooner than later. I will give you a call Saturday and we can figure details. Looking forward to meeting up with Dave and others Sunday as well.

Craig, apparently the converter has multi clutches and is beefed up. Hughes has an excellent reputation. Chris, thanks so much for the insight! I will do some research on the lockup option. Big cooler also.
