why does ford cut the wheel opening on a dually

why does ford cut the wheel opening on a dually

what is the reason behind this

Feeling dumb since I have a dually but what do you mean by "CUT THE WHEEL OPENING"?

I think he means why is the wheel opening cut open and not left as on a SRW type bed.

My guess is for clearance on the outside wheel when loaded etc.

IIRC the only difference in the actual bed panels between a single rear wheel and a dually is the holes in the sheet metal to mount the dually flares to. It might have been changed since I was in the business, but that's what I remember

This is how my buddies 04 is. I just put a fender (flare) on it for him, only differences I could see were the 8 million holes for the dually flare.
