I entered a commitment with mine kinda like marriage for some people. Till death do us part so I will be keeping mine forever. But then again if gas prices go up I may be cheating on her with a smaller girl that eats a lil less
I love my 03 V10 - I was looking for a low mileage, great condition one with captain's chairs and found mine after looking for 6 months. The V10 is a great engine and will tow very well - my Sea Ray is about 10,500 lbs loaded and it tows it great. Mileage is not the best at ~12 around town and ~14 on the highway (unless you do above 75). I was originally looking for a diesel but the higher upfront costs, higher maintenance costs and potential for very expensive repairs took me right to the V10. I don't see it as settling for the V10 - it's a great engine - quiet and smooth and has great power. Good luck in your search.
I also have a 2003 V10 Limited 4x4.....tows my 10,000lb Sea Ray with no problems. I hope gas pricing stays under control.....we are getting ripped off with this ethanol crap gas. Costs more to produce and gets poor gas mileage. Another US Govt failure at our cost, Mike.
Still looking. It's a tie between a 2003 limited 4x4 7.3 diesel, or a 2005 v-10 4x4 limited. Gas prices have skyrocketed, but people seem to want a premium for used vehicles right now. Any suggestions between my 2 choices? Still got a 3000 lb boat, and will use this vehicle to tow a 24' toy hauler about 3000 miles each summer. I have 2 kids now, and am running out of space in the 4 runner!
50,000 miles and not one problem to lose sleep over. Except the usual and customary exposed wiring (from rubbing on metal parts) in the steering column. Should have been a simple inexpensive repair, but stupid me, I let the stealership fix it. $300+ dollars, most of it labor.
Dang! Beat me to it!
I like the diesel. It is a third vehicle for me also although I am driving it more than I thought I would. The mpg alone over the V-10 has done it for me. There may be a bit more maintenance involved but I am a diesel head, both my vehicles are diesels. I average 16 in town and recently got 19.6 going to Michigan.

Get the 05, especially if it has lower miles.
The spark plug and exhaust studs issues are solved by that point, the newer front end is the one that everyone loves, and the fact that it's gonna sit is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Some of the maintenance has to be done even if it sits; and if it sits like mine did, I can tell you diesel batteries aren't cheap... The v10 has started at 25 below with a second worth of cranking; and when the battery did die eventually, my mustang was able to muster up enough juice to get it going (it was like garage queen jump starting the driveway queen). I doubt I could have pull that off with a diesel. Also, no idea where in cali you live, but if it's in the north and you see some cold weather, you may not like how they start after they've been sitting...
If you were retired and pulling your travel trailer all over the country, the diesel would make perfect sense.
i kinda fond of the 2000 Excursions. i'm on my second one and both were lifted. neither had the dreaded exhaust bolt problem. but then again both of these are low mileage rigs. (previous one had 86k miles before i sold her) now my current one has 83k miles with that being said..if the only drawback to the 2000-up V10's is the exhaust bolt problem (easy fix if your EX is lifted hehe), i would definitely not be afraid to purchase those years.
2003, Limited, 7.3, 4X4 all black. But thats what I have. I look high and low for a local cream puff X. Found some great 2005 6.0's. Passed on those and traveled a long way to get what I wanted.
Check my sig for my 7.3's. Wouldn't have anything else other than maybe a forged 7.3 in my dually. But all in all I cant complain.
But get what suites your needs AND pocketbook...the 7.3's do demand a premium...trust me...I know.
