Hello how is everyone doing today. I am writing today to ask for some help figuring out which y-pipe I need to order for the excursion. So my question is how do I know which year to buy as I see they have on for vehicles from 99-00 and 00-05. I tried looking in the forum and online and cannot find what the difference is.
Thanks in advance,
Nick
The difference is the later version had a choke point on each branch which narrows the pipe down to about 1 7/8" to muffle exhaust pulse on the V10. You can use either one and if you have a chance get the earlier one. I bought a Walker 50216 for the 5.4 Ex I'm redoing for my son. It has a choke point but it isn't as severe as the factory pipe. It's only $120 on Amazon:
Ok because the y-pipe on mine does not appear to have the choke down spots I believe it's all the same size piping I was going to get a spdperformance aftermarket y-pipe . So should I just leave it alone because I just ordered a set of Gibson headers for it and when I go to do the exhaust I might as well do the y-pipe if it will make it better.
Ya I wasn't going to use amazon never have used them I was going to use spdperformance y-pipe but again my other question was if my excursion doesn't have the pipe that is pinched down should I really even worry about doing it.
The 99-00 style had the ramhorns looking pipe. The later had the t pipe with choke point. If you look at 5star tunings site they have a picture comparing the two.
Plenty of members are impressed with the y pipe for the modular engines. I have one on my V10, the guys at the exhaust shop were impressed and said they couldn't make it for what it cost me. For your 5.4 there isn't much else you can do besides the y pipe and gears.
Ok thanks for all the information. Mine is the 99-00 style then and I will be doing the y-pipe along with the gibson headers and will eventually do the rest of the exhaust after the cat. I wish I could just get rid of the cat but can't because of inspection being in ny.
Are there any header options for the 5.4 that include the Y pipe along with the headers. I know the V-10 headers from Banks and Headman come with their own Y pipes, might be cheaper to get a set of headers with the Y than buying them separately.
I have done a lot of searching for different header options and did not come across any with the y-pipe also but I found the gibson headers for a real decent price and I know the y-pipe from 5 star is only around $115 so total I would have $500 into the header and y-pipe I also bought a set of stage 8 locking header bolts so I didn't think that was too bad. Here is the link were I got the headers from: http://m.autopartswarehouse.com/deta...27GP126S1.html
Check out the tech folder sticky for 1975stroppebajas page he has a solid write up on header install for the 5.4 in a super duty. May be very helpful, also WE3Zs and Sammie did some V10 header installs so you may look at those for when extracting bolts.
I put gibson headers on my old 5.4...with my MBRP exhaust and SPD y pipe i was told my truck sounded like a mustang. But the headers ticked from the thin wall pipe vs the massive factory manifold and it drove me nuts
Thank you everyone for all the information. When I do mine I will try and snap some pictures and post them I know I have a couple broken studs I don't know if they are flush to the head or not so I'm sure it will be fun. I don't expect anything to go easy on a ford. And if it sounds like a mustang I'm ok with that I love the way they sound
I was thinking about doing the headers back when I thought the 5.4 was going to be "the one" for me, but with just the y-pipe and tuner I'm happy There is a super small chance I'll swap in a flowmaster or something but I doubt it.
