Which Excursion is the best?
Broad topic. But which year and model 4x4 excursion is the best one? I am open to all engines. Will be taking it on long trips. towing sometimes a 3000lb boat to the lake on weekends. Will be used as a 3rd car. I am looking for most reliable years and engines. Budget under $20k.

The one that fits your needs
in my case, it's the latest one I got - the 05 ....
However, you are talking about a vehicle at least 6 years old now.....
for newer, you might consider the new dual cab trucks if you don't need the seating for 8 or so

Shoot I'd sell ya my 2000 7.3 D 4x4 with 107k Miles for 20k
You need 8 seats or 7?
Prefer Bench or Captain in Back?
Looking for one with bells and whistles or plain jane?
How many miles you willing to pay for?
Lots of option's to choose from. Can check here for people selling theirs or Autotrader.com
Bought both of mine from the web and made dealers drive em 300+ miles for me to look at them before I bought
Gluck tho either way!
Personally I prefer the 7.3 D and 4x4, but then again I pull a 30ft camper and love the life on a 7.3 if you take care of it (plus gas usage)

2000 7.3 PSD Limited. Forged rods and wider front leather seats. It just suffers from sub-par cupholders, but they can be updated
.
You can build one hell of a truck for under 20K. Once you find a truck, add intake, exhaust, gauges, and a custom chip and you'll love it NEVER look back.

Here's my .02.........'05 Limited, V10. (based on the low towing, 3rd vehicle concept). Last of the best.

X2 on that. I run across my PSD @ a deal and love it. I too bought it as a 3rd vehicle and it ended up getting better mpg's than the 2nd so I sold my 2nd. Based on the limited towing and as a 3rd vehicle I would shoot for a low mileage V-10 myself

For less than 20k, a 2003, 2004 or 2005 V10 Excursion sounds like a good deal for you especially considering the value that diesel Excursions are holding these days.

Mine - Why? Because its mine and paid for. I've had it since new, maintained it well and never had a major problem. 200K It's now our hunt/camp mobile only. We load the dogs in and go. It's always loaded ready and waiting.

Bingo, in a nutshell.
Now, youknowitdadio, all ya gotta do is just figure out which one does that best!
For me, it's my 2000 Limited 7.3L PSD Excursion.
Legendary longevity of the 7.3L
2000 model year so I have forged rods and feel safer when as I continue to add hot-rod/go-faster parts
Limited because I prefer leather
4x4 because I'll never wish I had two-wheel drive when driving it, but if it was a 4x2, there would be times I wish I had a 4x4
Tows my 31' 10K travel-trailer perfectly
Tows my 4-horse bumper pull perfectly
Works perfectly as my wife's daily driver

Hah! I just saw this after posting! GMTA!
I updated the cup holder in my Ex to the deeper style found on the '03+ Excursions!

Best ones in my opinion: 03 or 05
If you want miles per-gallon get the 6.0 diesel.
If you want miles per-dollar get the V-10
If you want to change head bolt studs get the 6.0 diesel.
If you want to change exhaust manifold studs get the V-10
The above is an age old story and history supports the above facts.

If I had it to do all over again it's a no brainer! 2003 with the 7.3 Diesel! That's the newest model year that can be had with the 7.3.
