Keep it or sell it?

I have a 2006f350 with the 6.0L PSD, I bought it in 06 with 20 000 miles on it, other than replacing the turbo at 25000 miles its been good, it now has 70 000 miles on it and I am getting worried, especially when you read all the problems that exist. Is the 6 a lemon and the worst motor ford has put in a truck? Should I get rid of it before it starts costing me? Are the later 6's any better? I am struggling with this decision, I love the truck and would like to keep it forever but I really don't need a 1 ton diesel and I don't have the $ to repair the beast if it starts acting up, a half ton would work for me, although I do have a 10000lb camper.
The truck is completly stock........Thanks........Jason

I have a standing offer to people in your position to come and pick up your truck and solve your problem for free --- just have the clear title ready, sign it over to me. No charge at all!

If you tow a 10,000lb camper, you need a 1 ton --- maybe not a diesel, but a 1 ton.

As far as I am concerned, at your mileage, it is still under warranty, and barely broken in.

Would suggest you consider, "it aint broke, don't fix it".

Having said that ---

I would routinely pull EGR valve, clean carbon deposits out, (if you do it once, and it doesn't come back, it tells you that it is something to do with fuel in the mid 2000s).

Have you done all the proper maintenance on schedule?

That include changing fluids, coolant (nearly due), flush VC-9?

Is there any signs of trouble?

Are you exercising it "Italian tuneup" every month?

Have you updated the flash? / Ford firmware?

Do you have a coolant filter installed?

Let me get out my crystal ball...... Seriously, if you have kept the truck in good condition, 2006 was the introduction of the commonized engine, the snap to connect fitting would be the only thing to look forward to if something were to fail.

Carcas,
I posed the same question several months ago and gearloose1 offerred to take my truck off my hands as well. Your concern is legitimate. I am in a similar situation. My truck was purchased new by me for towing back in 06, but my needs have changed and I don't tow at all anymore. So, my truck has become a glorified grocery getter. I love the body style of this truck (much more than the new trucks) although the newer trucks are appealling also. Mine is just now paid off too, so a new payment doesn't excite me. I am going down to my local Ford dealer tomorrow to test drive a gasser--2011 F250 SD. I realize that these new engines (the gasser 6.2 and diesel 6.7) could turn out to be turds also. SOrry for the rambling--and no real guidance. Just wanted to know you are not alone.

If you don't feel you need it and don't trust it be honest with yourself and sell it. Life is too short to fret over a truck or anything else that you like but don't need.

The essence of underwriting is to make a bet that you are a better risk than they guess.

Typically, $500 to $1,000 of that $2,550 goes to the dealer, and the insurance company gets the rest.

So knock off a bit for admin costs, the maximum they can afford to spend on your case to the end is $2,050 less admin costs. Or lower if they paid more.

Mind you, they buy service and parts cheaper than we can, so there is a bit of a margin there.

Insurance companies are in business because they make good bets --- like life insurance where they have handsomely profited from increased life expectancy.

I bet you can't outbet them.

14 days after my warranty expired my oil cooler failed and also the HG's. Dropped thousands into it and Ford did zero for me so close the the warranty expiring. Wish I had known that was about to happen, I would have sold my 6.0 in a heart beat! Still going back and forth with selling mine. Very nervous every time I tow with it! I can completely understand your dilemma! What would you replace your truck with? Lots of things to consider! Good Luck!

lmao, i hope their aint any 6.0s up in siberia haha

To the op, is your rig payed off? The way i see it is alotta people hate having car payments. I do to. If its payed off, i think itd be cheaper to get the warrenty for $2500 then going out and spending $50,000 on a new truck.. $50,000 can buy alotta warrenties or truck parts.

Since your got the "commonized" 6.0 your worries shouldnt be as bad. But as we all know ANY machine can fail.. You never know, your 6.0 may last a lot longer with minimal problems or you may have every known problem with your truck go bad.. Or if you get a new truck, that truck could be plagued with more problems then your 6.0.. You wont know until you deicide to keep it or sell it for a new truck. We all know owning anything mechanical is a gamble whether it has a good service history or not..

The 6.0 is a temperamental beast.

When properly cared for, it is effectively a medium duty engine in a light duty chassis (F-350/E-350).

The motor will outlast many of the chassis components --- unless the owner really keeps up the chassis maintenance.

In my case, that mean a lot of work refurbishing a 250,000 mile worn E van.

We are talking about things like Front left door, drivers seat being worn out from use...

Things likes rear springs broken before...

Things like axle bearings...

When you have that much other (non motor) stuff break... the motor's (once tamed) few hiccups, is small potatoes.

Where else can you get a motor that can reliably and on demand, put out 150+hp, 200ft lbs all day, 24/7, and just keep going?

A V-10 gasser can't do that for much more than 150,000 miles --- look at how long the V-10s last in motorhomes, where they have a similar demanding profile.
