This is a little off subject but when I bought two "junk AODs" at least on of them was mostly fine. I could probably find ten or twenty "junk" M50Ds and find a good one out of them. My logic is to get some "junk trannys", get the ATSG manuals and learn how to build my tranny real well.
Get an M5R2, and rebuild it. Kits are available from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard for a pretty good price.
I have developed an adapter to run a small-block Ford transmission behind a Mercedes diesel, and the M5R2 is my preferred transmission. This was the upgrade "HD" trans in the Thunderbird, the T5 was the light duty unit. It is not a fast shifting transmission, it's not for drag racing, but it works.
The ZF is great, it's a bit clunky to shift and shifts much slower than the M5R2, but will last a good long time as long as you keep the proper synthetic fluid in it. If the first gear seems too low, start in second.
I got one that came with a spare one in pieces in a bucket for $150. It needs to be rebuilt, but they are out there. I got mine by placing a wanted ad on Craigslist.
