OK So when I was changing my front rotors out today with some new Wagners I noticed one of my calipers was busted up. Look below. Truck only has 50k on it.
How did this happen and how do I go about fixing?
You can get a rebuild kit pretty cheap. I think it's like 20 bucks for the kit with everything that you need. I ended up replacing both of mine about 6 months ago, but I needed the truck back in service asap. I bought new calipers at the dealership for just a bit over $100 each if i remember correctly.
I had to replace my front driver side last fall and just recently did the front brakes and my passenger side was also busted up. Autozone had them for 65 each with exchange.
comes complete with new bracket and all, I ended up not taking the bracket bc I left mine behind and didn't want to go all the way home again. (20 min away). Basically just took off brake line and installed new crush washers (came with them) and then bled the brakes. Easy!
I pumped out the master reservoir until almost empty and filled it with new fluid and then bled just the side I replaced...shouldn't need to do all of them if you only replace one...but I might be wrong. They seem fine to me. Only thing with these replacements is I noticed they get surface rust allot faster than stocks. Probably wouldn't hurt to paint them prior to install.
now that I think about it, after replacing the fluid it probably would have been a good idea to get the new stuff through all the lines and as much old stuff out as possible...but it was cold and I was lazy. lol
had the rotors turned in the morning, put on a new set of pads. Driver side (new one last year ) piston went back in smoothly, the right side took quite a bit of effort. Drove around for a while before I noticed the right side was smoking more than it should. Took the wheel off sgsin and discovered it was bound up. Once I got it off I noticed it was pretty beat up.
Sure did...this truck seems to eat pads and rotors...and calipers..lol
I only use the truck during the winter and bad weather days, I have 76k miles and have done brakes 3 times! Once was by dealer under warranty when my rear caliper was binding up and causing a vibration. Got a new caliper, rotor and pads then.
