Todays oils have cleaning additives. I wouldn't mess with putting in ATF. You might just loosen deposits from seals and it could start leaking. I don't know about adding a drain plug to the torque converter. I believe the transmission filter is a replaceable filter but I'm not sure. I understand that the new motocraft plugs are now one piece. Don't know about using a 3/8 impact wrench on the plugs.

Back in the old days guys would put one qt of atf and 4 qts of oil in engines until next oil change but I really wouldnt mess with it now days. Still no one piece motorcraft plug as far as i know but really are you gonna own the truck with 196k miles? At my work we have found the impact method and pb blaster to work the best. You will get 100 different opinions on that im sure but thats mine

The ATF I agree is not worth using anymore.

The impact wrench works well if you put some penetrating oils in first and let it sit for about 30 minutes to get the plugs out. Then just take it slow. But always make sure you have the plug removal tool on hand should one break.

Go back with the motorcraft plugs. I have read on here time and time again about people using another brand and having to pull them after 10-15k and replace the plugs for a rough running engine. You just have to get some anti seize and add it to the pug before installing.

Torque converter no idea. I know you can add a drain plug to the transmission pan but not sure about the torque. The filter in the transmission is replaceable but reuse the gasket when putting everything back.

x2- Motorcraft are not 1 piece for our year motors. I did put in the Champions, but on my drive to Florida and back over teh Christmas holiday, I noticed my idle getting rough. I really hope it's not the freaking plugs. $20/piece down the drain....

With everything I have read on here that is where i would start first because some of the guys on here have spent thousands to try and find the problem and it came back to the $20 bucks they spent on the plugs that weren't motorcraft.
