I was moving my transfer case and transmission to neutral to check my rear brakes, got it all in neutral and my truck just shut off! Like I just turned the key off. I put everything back to park and 2 wheel drive. Now it still wont start. Im getting power to the glow plugs, getting power to the front plug on top of the IP, nothing to the rear one. Im getting fuel to the Injector pump also.
Im thinking its something to do with a neutral safety switch? I checked all the fuses under the dash. How can I tell or bypass the neutral safety switch? Im kinda puzzled on this.
I took a test light to the thick black wire with orange running that runs from the fender mounted solenoid to the alternator and got power.
Do you mean that when you turn the key to the start position the starter does not run? If so try jumping the two large terminals on the fender mounted starter relay with a wrench or similar. If the starter now runs then pull the light gauge wire off of the relay and jump that terminal on the relay from a battery pos terminal. If the starter runs then good bet the NSS is a problem, if the starter does not run then relay is probably bad.
It goes without saying that all battery terminals need to be clean and tight, ground wire connections to engine and body need to be good, wiring connections to the starter need to be good and the heavy gauge wires from the batteries need to be in good condition.
It was running then just shut off. I tried to turn it back on and it just kept cranking and cranking but no fire. Im getting fuel, power to the FSS, and getting power to the Thick black wire from the alt to the solenoid on fender.
Really the only thing the IDI diesel needs to run is power to the FSS. You have checked that and power is there. Did you unplug the wire and plug it back on a few times to check that you are getting a "click" to indicate that the solenoid is working?
The only other thing would be if there is power to the FSS with key in the run position but not in the start position. You could check that with a meter while cranking over on the starter or unplug the wire to the FSS and throw a wire from the FSS to a battery pos. terminal and try to start the engine. If it then starts I would think either the ign switch (on steering column under the dash) is bad or the plug connection to it is loose/dirty.
