I'd say they're different. I've read that the starters are not interchangeable, so that would suggest that the flywheels or ring gears are different. And I'm pretty sure all PSD converters are 6 bolt and the IDI were always 4.

They are, I said that in my post. Yea, I just looked up the starters and they are different. Why would the flywheel be under the same part number though?
I don't see a pattern for the 4 holes we use. Maybe the group of holes are for balancing it (but then why is there also a weight)?
I'm not sure. I mean if I can't use a PSD flywheel with my motor, thats fine. I was just seeing IF it was possible I could upgrade to the 6-stud since I'll have it all apart.
You'd need to change the trans too as I'm pretty sure the TC don't interchange either..... Sorry, hopefully someone with more knowledge of the two will chime in to verify.
I just ran into this problem. The torque converter shop where I took my 4 bolt converter for my '94 E4OD told me to upgrade to the 6 bolt and get the 6 bolt flexplate from a parts house, so I bought the 6 bolt converter and called autozone. Autozone said they have the 6 bolt instock. Took mine to match and the new plate crank bolt pattern P/N FRA-420 had a wider bolt pattern. Parts guy looked back to '92 and it showed the same part number. All Diesels showed this part number with a 6 bolt and larger diameter crank bolt pattern. Also NO 4 bolt for any years 90-95! I then drove to Oreilly's and Advanced Auto. All three had the same P/N and same physical part with 6 bolt torque converter pattern and larger diameter crank bolt pattern. No 6 bolt torque converter pattern with IDI crank bolt pattern nor a 4 bolt torque converter! Now I'm @#$@#$! I guess I have to take the converter back and get the 4 bolt.

Reason: misspelling
your not going to have any luck with the flexplate nobody makes them the ones the auto parts places have will not fit and ford no-longer has them i had to replace mine recently and it took a month to find one and i paid 450 for it my father in-law and i have been thinking about making billet flexplates for the 7.3idi
it was a 4 bolt the guys at ford said they couldn't get one anymore so i don't know what they would do i cant remember the name of the place that i got mine i think there in cali they bought all of them from ford when ford stopped making them
