I'm about to swap out a very tired IDI for a fairly fresh IDIT. The problem is, the turbo engine came out of an E350 auto, but I'm mating it to a Spicer 5spd. Can I re-use the IDI flywheel or do I need to find a turbo specific one?
Cheers
You should be good to go on the flywheels, unless the E350 was an E4OD then you would need to remove the flex-plate(automatic tranny flywheel) and put the flywheel from the tired engine on there. Might I ask what is wrong with your engine to the poitn where you think it needs replacement???
The old IDI has had too many years of pulling an overloaded 26' box truck around. She's way down on power and all systems are up to snuff, so I want to pull it before it goes bang and rebuild to have as a spare. The IDIT was a lucky buy as it was in a smashed E350 but has very low miles on it.
So the old IDI flywheel will be fine on the turbo engine?
factory turbo engines are in fact externally balanced via a different harmonic ballancer and flywheels, and cannot be swapped.weights are in fact different on both ends.
what year is the donor van? was the '93 and '94 E series offered with an optional factory turbo like the trucks? if so,and if you do have a factory '93/94 van engine, then be careful.
no matter though since it doesn't have a flywheel but a flexplate anyway.you'll need to score a turbo specific flywheel that will be properly balanced with that engines turbo specific balancer.
if the van is not equipped with a factory turbo, then your current flywheel on your old n/a will work, and must be used actually in this case.
I'm running these motors in International S-series trucks, all with Spicer 5 speeds. So, the flywheels from the NA engines aren't balanced the same as the turbo's? The Turbo engine was a drop-in replacement in the E350, and had the overdrive auto trans.

no they're not.

what year? is it a turbo engine or n/a engine with an added turbo? some internals are in fact different on the factory turbo engines, thus the reason for them being balanced differently, and why n/a ballancers/flywheels or flexplates cannot be interchanged.
It's a 94 E350, and the engine is a drop-in factory turbo, reman. So, I need a turbo specific flywheel huh? Any ideas on a part number so I can start the search?
hey,i found where i read this (its been a while and i surprised myself finding it again lol.)
its the one called
93 94 7.3 IDI

Diesel Engine

its a very nice pdf to have.so be sure to save it to your pc (which im making sure i do this time too.)
Well, thank you sir. I love my trucks and their reliability/ease of repair. While I'm at it, anyone have a IDIT flywheel kicking around? I have a bad feeling they're going to be a rare commodity in my neck of the woods...

Na, you can order them new all day long for a little over 100 bucks. O'Riley's has them, DriveWire has them too.
