Hood ornament ?
Hi,I would like to add a original type Ford hood ornament to the hood of my 74 F100. I want to get it installed in the correct place on the hood. If anyone has one, can you give my the measurements from the back edge of the hood to the back edge of the ornament ? Afew close up pictures would also be great, maybe a picture of the underside of the hood too. I just want to make sure I get the ornament in the correct factory location. The more information the better. Thank you.

81-f-1-150-explorer I liked the look of the universal type ornament, I've never seen one on a 73/79 dent side and didn't know how well they would fit over the high center line of the 73/79 hood. So I think I will go with the ornament that has the 3 lions on it.
Thanks for the help, measurements would be very hepful also.
Has anyone seen a picture of a 73/79 with the universal hood ornament ?
Wreath with three lions: Brown (Ranger XLT Lux Group) D6TZ-16850-A
Wreath with three lions: Red (Universal) D6TZ-16850-RS
The above ornaments look identical to the explorer ornaments, except the three lions placed where it would read Explorer.
The universal ornament pictured (D3TB-16850-N) was indeed designed with these trucks in mind. I've seen a couple. One on a 1974. It looked alright and fit well, but a little too flashy for my taste. It would be year correct for your truck though.
There is yet a third universal ornament I do not have a picture of that was a dealer installed ornament. Engineering number: D3AZ-16850-A

ornament pictured (D3TB-16850-N-this is a fake-made up by repro parts sellers part number!) was indeed designed with these trucks in mind. Uh huh, yeah right!I've seen a couple. One on a 1974. It looked alright and fit well, but a little too flashy for my taste. It would be year correct for your truck though.
It's not year correct for any truck!
(sigh) As original, there was no such thing as this pictured hood ornament for any year Ford truck! You wanna know why? This is C2DZ16178A = the right/left front fender ornament for a 1962/63 FALCON
The repro parts sellers found it fits the 1973/79 F100/350's hood contour, so it's listed in their parts catalogs...but as original, there was NO such thing.
There is another similar looking hood ornament offered by the repro parts sellers, it's not correct either as it's B7A16850A = 1957 Ford Passenger Car (not T-Bird) hood ornament.
Look in any 1973/79 sales brochure or in the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, you won't find ONE ornament that looks like this, cuz Ford never offered it.
You won't find this FAKE made up part number (D3TB-16850-N) listed either. All Ford (not L/M)) specific part numbers have a Z as the 4th digit in the prefix. Examples: D3TZ / D3AZ.

There were TWO different Wreath with 3 Lion hood ornaments.
1973/75 F100/350 XLT & 1973/79 F100/350 except 1976/79 XLT & 1978/79 Lariat: D3AZ16850A .. Hood Ornament which was replaced by D7OZ16850A in 1977, which was replaced in 1978 by D8BZ16850A
Since this ornament was an accessory (except 1973/75 XLT's), not all trucks have it.
These three ornaments were also used on 1973/78 LTD / 1977/79 LTD II and Ranchero / 1978/83 Fairmont. These ornaments are a different shape & style than the following:
1976/79 F100/350 XLT & Lariat: D6TZ16850A
This is...at least...the 100th time I posted this same info on FTE...because: People see this so-called ornament listed in repro parts sellers catalogs...but as original, it did not exist.
Part number info source: 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog...which is available on a CD from hipoparts.com.
When I go to paint the truck in the spring the ornament will be comming off.
Since there was no such thing as a "universal" hood ornament, which type are you refering to?
If it's the repro parts seller's so-called D3TB-16850-N, this is not a hood ornament at all. It's being hyped as one...but it ain't.
It's a 1962/63 FALCON front fender ornament.
