well im really interested in the lumy method.however the meters sold on ebay.....few and far between.im in $250 so far and still need a crank sensor(dishonest people, ruin the world for the rest of us.) but i scored 3 working lumy probes, and hopefully, and it appears a working meter as well.so im not filing a claim with ebay/paypal.you can't find these parts anymore.just ticks me off cus he claimed it all worked.

the most cost effective way would be to just get this:
Ferret Instruments V765-01 Injector Tester - Fuel System Tools

imho,it doesn't make any sense to frig around with the old discontinued units if your going for pulse method.save yourself the headaches and just get that.
most use the pulse method anyway.

I scored a new Kent -Moore pulse timing set up a couple of years ago for 200 +/- dollars, cant remember exactly. What I can tell you for sure after seting up my timing with the meter is: If you get a pre-ignition type rattle when the engine is cold when you step on the accelerator, and then when the rattle is gone after the cold advance cuts off- your timing will be very close to correct.

yeah, but you really need to know what a proper idi setup correctly sounds like.even then you can be off by a few degrees.
the cold advance is going to provide a rattle when your in the ball park simply because it advances the timing.the question doing it by ear is,just how much rattle when cold, when warm, and pressing the skinny is enough or too much.too much, and there goes the glow plugs, excessive piston ring and wrist pin ware.
it could cost a mpg in fuel economy all easy and a loss of who knows how many hp simply by having a little less rattle,or a little more rattle than you should have.
