Hi, Im new here and this site is awesome. I have a 79 short bed 150 and i was crawlin around some hills on my property and the left front U-Joint broke. I think the axle shaft slid out some and the gears started eating their way out of the dif cover. Im guessing that is what happened cause i havent pulled it apart yet and dont know much about axles yet. does this seem right? Or is there something wrong with the front dif as well?
first of all if you broke an axle shaft u-joint, it won't necessarily let the inner axle slide out unless you chewed the yokes to pieces. If the axle did slide out, there isn't anythng in the diff. that could come out the axle tube, unless you thrashed the spiders or chipped teeth on the ring or pinion. I have snapped axle shafts many times over the last few years (rock crawling my jeep) and have never even torn a seal. I even snapped the splines right off in the locker one time and drove 15 miles home with no damage. If you know you broke the axle shaft joint, unlock the hubs (if you have locking hubs) drive carefully home because you can have the steering lock under ideal circumstances!
Yea I need to tear into it. Its gonna be a few days cause I have to work. Im sure that the axle joint on the driver side is broke cause its gone lol. And im sure also that the gears are eating their way out of the dif cover. Also the seal on the passenger side is leaking pretty bad, this started when the other problems came about. Past that I think i need to just tear into it to see exactly what is going on. I should take some pictures and put em on here tonight. How do you post pictures to threads on here?
