So I got another question about my 73 350. when I baught it a couple months ago the gas gauge was working then it went to sometimes working to now not working at all. Anyone know if this could be a simple fix or is it something that I will have to replace the sending unit, if I do have to replace the sending unit is it a easy job or a pain in the ***?
The gradual failure makes it likely that the float filled with gas and sunk to the bottom of the tank for good. You can test the wiring upstream of the sending unit by turning the key to ACC and removing the sending unit connector and grounding it. If the needle pegs FULL (as it should), then something is wrong with the sending unit - either the sending unit rheostat, or a punctured float. The latter is more common. You can test the sending unit once it's out, but either way the sending unit must come out in this case.
i wish the tank was in the cab but its under the bed. I was looking at it earlier tonight and I dont see any easy way to get to it. so I hope that it wont be to hard of a job but it sounds like im going to end up replacing the sending unit.
Search for a thread in this forum called "dirty gas tank" dated 12,7,2010 I give step by step instructions with a few tips in that thread on how to drop the rear tank.
Its easy, but yes do some trouble shooting first to make sure it the sending unit and not just some wiring issues.
its really easy but make sure its empty lol and kind of clean the tank before you put it back in. basically you 1)empty it 2)take off filler hoses 3)unplug sending unit and fuel line to engine then 4) take off the straps
