OK guys did a search the last few days but could not find anything specific to thermostat. After reading a thread from someone, somewhere I seen that their transmission temps were 160-170 degrees and I began to wonder as mine never ever gets that high. During the summer pulling my trailer it might get to 85-95. Today after driving around it was only at 50, but it is also 10 degrees outside. Coolant and oil temps come up fine to 188-192.
I thought I heard of a thermostat in the transmission, yes-no? If so I would say it is stuck open yes-no? And lastly can it be replaced relativley easy with a transmission service? Thanks guys
Are you using the Bully Dog to read OBD temps? If so, I wonder if the BD is reading the temp properly, and also wonder if your TFT sensor is good. A good check is to look at the ECT, EOT, and TFT in the morning before you start the engine. They should all be within a few degrees of one another. Make sure it isn't showing °C.
There is a thermostat, but your temps are so low that I'm not sure they can possibly be correct even if the stat were stuck open.
The thermostat is not easy to change. It's inside the pump body, so you have to remove the trans and then remove the pump. Tear down the pump and you'll find the thermostat.
Even if the thermostat were stuck open the trans would not run 85-95F. I agree that you're seeing degrees C, not F, and those temps are normal.

Good point regarding the TFT.

I just looked now but the numbers might be skewed a bit as I have it plug'd in but get this. My ECT is 114, EOT 99 and TFT is 84...go figure 84?? It was not 84 this afternoon when driving and my ECT & EOT were at operating temps. This is after sitting for four hours in 10-15(F). I dunno

All the temps are indicating F

Thanks Mark. I'm thinking then the TFT sensor may be pooched, although I guess it is possible the Bullydog PMT could be reading it wrong. I monitor Pyro, EOT, TFT and ECT. All but TFT are within spec.
Bumping this thread as I have a similar situation. I'm using a Bully Dog to monitor temps. My trans stabilizes at 40 degrees F. In the cold (less than 20 degrees f). If the truck is warmed up and I shut it off for about fifteen minutes, as soon as I start the truck the trans temp will be between 100f and 75f, as soon as I drive around it falls back to 40f and stays there...
Gunnar, as a check - change your display back to use US units and
see if the 3 temps are now closer together?
In my scangaugeII, I have to manually program in the TFT info
in order to read it. So, "maybe" it would be wrong if I converted
to C vs. F? I know nothing about your BD, but if they pre-programmed
in the TFT - maybe there is a bug in the BD.
Or find a friend with another ODBII reader and have them check it.
My 6.0 sat over the 3 day weekend. low 50s to high 60s temps.
On Tuesday AM all 3 temps (ECT, EOT, and TFT) where all within
a degree or two of each other @ 7AM they were very close to
the reported outdoor temp (54*F).
It appears the TFT cools off much faster than the ECT/EOT temps.
Probably because the TFT doesn't get as hot as the other temps,
so it's always going to be cooler once things are shutdown and
allowed to cool.
Overnight, my ECT/EOT cool down and in the morning are nearly
identical (usually 1 or 2* delta) but they are still 10-15* above
the outdoor temp the next morning - they haven't had enough
time to completely cool off yet.
The TFT however, is almost always back to outdoor ambient temp,
because it was only 135* when I got home the night before.
Once summer temps hit, I'd be curious to see how low the temps go
when it's 70s @ night here.
Mine are all within a couple of degrees before the truck is started in the morning. Here is a link to my thread where I mentioned that when I added a winter front to the truck my trans temps went up to 90-100 degrees.
I have always had the BD monitor reading in farenheit I actually don't even know if it will read metric. I am going to have a transmission service here in the spring before I start towing again and I am going to have the dealer check the temp with their equipment.
