I removed the old modulator valve. As the bracket loosened, the valve started to come out with it, as though it was spring loaded. When fully removed, there is a steel rod sticking out of the hole.
The rod is about an 1/8" dia. and is located at 12 o'clock inside the hole where the valve goes into the housing. The rod moves a bit in the hole, but will not go back in far enough to get the new (or the old ) valve in.
Is there some trick to this? I really need to have this truck running by this afternoon.
I've looked at several sites, trying to figure this out but there is no mention that I can find.
Thanks in advance.
It`s been years but I think that rod should push in against a spring. Try removing the rod and repositioning it.
If that doesn`t work and there are no other suggestions and you need the truck then maybe leave the rod out, replace the modulator and shift the trans manually until you get a chance to drop the pan and valve body.
Maybe also post this problem on the transmission page, some great experts there.
can't say with certainty but I had an imbecile replace the modulator on my 87 and the idiot left that rod out and my perfectly good transmission despite being manually shifted gutted it'self lost reverse first then 2nd then 3rd and 1st won't get you very far and it had started slipping on top of it. just a warning of what Could happen Emphasis on COULD happen
Thank you gentlemen.
Knowing that the rod pokin' out there is normal is a big help.
The rod doesn't seem to come out, but I didn't try very hard either. I didn't want to break anything. I'll give it try now.
Thanks again.
